Green boards with silver lettering on the spine. 160 historical and informative pages! "This book is no biography. All it does is to present, from several people who knew him and his writings, an answer to the simple question 'C. S. Lewis - how did he strike you?' A man with such a diversity of subjects, with such a wide-ranging, adventurous outlook, might well elicit conflicting views of him. But not a bit of it. Even with a certain amount of overlapping, which was deliberate and inevitable, we find a composite picture of very much a whole man, one with a closely knit mind and certainly not divided up into categorical departments." ---- from the Preface.

Magazine / Periodical First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Black-and-White Photographs (illustrator). 1st Edition. In 1946 Penguin Books issued this First Issue of the "Penguin Music Magazine, a paperback-sized periodical with no advertising, but a healthy selection of articles and pictures about things musical, including operas, ballet, theater and classical composing. These early issues were edited by Ralph Hill. This is Number 4, issued in 1947. There is a nice selection of contemporary photographs arranged in a discrete section. The first photo section is a pictorial essay on the production of 78 rpm records. The photographs are fascinating. The second photo section is given over to ballet. Featured are The Ballet Rambert, Walter Gore, Sally Gilmour, and John Gilpin - among others. The written articles are quite varied, view the Contents page in the picture provided , or read the Table of contents below. England had just come out of the Second World War, and production materials, such as paper were still in short supply. The quality of paper reflects that. Because of this such publications are often fragile, and proper care should be taken when handling them. PENGUIN MUSIC MAGAZINE IV, December 1947 CONTENTS : ** Through the Looking-Glass - by Ralph Hill ** An English Critic Looks at American Music - by Scott Goddard ** Time, Gentlemen Please! - by F. Bonavia ** A New Movement in Music - by Humphrey Searl ** The Symphonic Treadmill - by Cyril Bourne-Newton ** Mendelssohn Revalued #2 - by Robert L. Jacobs ** To Start an Argument #3 : Music Without Taxation? - by Gunn Gwennet & Hubert Foss ** Personality Corner - by C. B. Rees ** Brains Trust - by Julian Herbage ** New Books - by Various persons ** New Music - by Robin Hull ** The Record Collector -. by Alec Robertson ** Music on the Air - by Stanley Bayliss ** Opera in London - by Stephen Williams ** Ballet in London - by Arnold Haskell ** Concerts in London - by George Dannatt ** Northern Diary : Scotland - by Maurice Lindley ** Liverpool - by A. K. Holland ** Manchester - by J. H. Elliott ** Birmingham - by John Waterhouse TITLE : Penguin Music Magazine No. IV EDITOR : Ralph Hill IMPRINT : Penguin Books PLACE : Hammondsworth, Middlesex, England DATE : (December) 1947 EDITION : First Edition STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DETAILS : Small-sized periodical in mass paperback format; Illustrated with photographs; 102 pages + 2 pages of ads; 5" x 8" decorated wraps (Dancing penguin on front).
