Seller: A Turn of the Page Books, Fishers, IN, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. Quarter red leather binding with 5 raised bands and gilt decoration to the back strip. Small damp stain to foredege of front free end paper. Text is clean, tight and complete. Includes his confidential correspondence with Mr Wilkes, and his private letters addressed to Mr H.S.Woodfall. With a preliminary essay, notes and folding fac-similes. Of a Whiggish political bent, the Junius' letters attacked many of George III's reign, including the monarch himself. The first Junius letter appeared in Woodfall's 'Public Advertiser' in Nov, 1768 and they were published periodically through 1772. The original author of the letters has never been satifactorily determined, though current scholarship attributes them to Sir Philip Francis (denied by Woodfall), a clerk in the War Office during the years Junius' letters were appearing in the 'Public Advertiser.' A handsome copy.

Add to basketBooklet - Unbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. Henry Sampson Woodfall prosecuted for publishing Junius's letter critical of royal authority. 14 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Transcripts of these famous letters with 2 folding facsimilies of letters. Two volumes in one: vol. 1, 216 p. ; vol. 2, 215 p. These letters are from the London edition of Woodfall's Junius, and contain his annotations and notes. Junius was the pseudonym of an unkown writer in England. His letters were published between 1769 and 1772 and deal with his views of corruption in English government and notions of freedom of speech, press, etc. Henry Woodfall was the printer of The Advertiser, the paper in which these letters originally appeared in London. Scattered light foxing to the title page and foldout letters, old owner name in pencil and small old owner name stamp, else a nice clean, tight and unmarked book in original publisher's red blind stamped cloth binding with gilt spine lettering. This is undated, but probably was published about 1850 based on the look and feel of the book--the title page of volume 2 indicates a publication date of [1853? ]--last number is hard to read. ; Facsimilie Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 216, 215 pages.
