Add to basketPrinted wrappers, small 4to, 58 pp. From the introduction: "The letters here transcribed date from c. 1806 (when Hazlitt wrote to George Dyer to reschedule a meeting) to 1830 (when he asked George Bartley for free tickets to Covent Garden Theatre). Although many of these letters are short, collectively they provide new and substantial information on Hazlitt's personal and professional life. A previously unpublished letter to John Murray in 1808, for example, demonstrates that Hazìitt was translating Jean Francois Bourgoing's Tableau de l'Espagne moderne at the time. The manuscript of Hazlitt's long letter to Peter George Patmore of 5 March 1822 enables us to correct many errors in previously printed versions of this letter and to study once more the artistry by which the letters to Patmore were transformed into Liber Amoris, that book of love for Sarah Walker that disenchanted and sometimes disgusted so many of Hazlitt's readers. Other unpublished letters, like the one to W. Underwood of 3 May 1828, introduce new names into Hazlitt's circle of acquaintances as well as new addresses from which he wrote these letters. Because two-thirds of these twenty-seven new holograph letters were addressed to publishers, most of the explanatory notes focus on the publishing history of Hazlitt's works. The London, Edinburgh, and Paris publishers here represented include John Murray, Charles Ollier, Thomas Cadell, Henry Colburn, Charles Cowden Clarke, Henry Leigh Hunt, Owen Rees, Archibald and David Constable. Inscribed and signed by the author on the title-page "To Stephen Weissman from Charles E. Robinson". Very Good.
