Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good +. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition/3rd stated Printing (October 1974). SIGNED by Michael Shaara on a bookplate attached opposite half-title page (signature only). Scarce signature from Pulitzer winner. DJ rubbed with some edge-wear and a couple closed tears to front panel and small chips to corners and spine ends. $8.95 price present on DJ flap; mylar protected. Also includes laid-in three photocopies of signed letters from author to seller. One is a Sept.1981 typed signed letter, to seller from Shaara talking about his novels; how is original family name is 'Sciarra' and ends mentioning the possibility of making a movie of 'The Killer Angels': "Dear Mr. Montemarano: Your letter concening my new book, 'The Herald' was just mailed to me by McGraw-Hill--who, by the way, have done the worst job I've ever seen in publishing, and I appoligize for them. Yours was the first letter I've received, and since M-H also printed, along with 'The Herald', my first hardback, 'The Broken Place, and since you already have 'The Herald' and would like an autograph in it, I'm sending along 'The Broken Place' with an autograph, and my compliments, and hope you don't mind. 'The Broken Place' was my first book and it was put out by NAL back at the same time they discontinued hardback publishing, so nobody ever heard of it until the second book won the Pulitzer. After the Library Journal read it they called me 'a born writer' and it's autobiographical, gives me a good feeling, and I hope you like it. Simon and Schuster-Pocket Books- is putting out a collection of my short stories next spring so I guess I'm slowly coming back to life after that motorcycle accident. By the way, thought you might like to know this--my father was born in Italy and his name was 'Sciarra', and he came to the states at the age of 3. He had a Dutch teacher who began spelling his name 'Shaara', and when he brought it home that way his folks decided to leave it alone, the way Americans spelled it, and I didn't know that until I was almost forty. But my birth certificate reads 'Shaara', so I guess I'm stuck. But anyway, thought you might like to know that, your name being from the same place. Nice of you to write. Am making a movie of 'The Killer Angels'. Finally. No one could raise the money before, but maybe now.hope so. Best Michael Shaara". The second letter is xerox copy of signed letter on author's stationary: "April 14, 1982. Dear Dan: I was up in New York last week in March --cold? Hoo! Story is that Robert Redford is interested in doing the Chamberlain part of the movie, and now has put a real kick into making enough money to produce it, so maybe it'll get going. Also, Robert Duvall was given the script, asked to play Longstreet, but he wants Lee. Don't know what that means. But things are moving, and thought you'd like to know. Also, I saw the play, AMADEUS, in NY. Seen that? I recommend it. Amazing. And sure is true. Well, hope you got through that winter in one piece. Only time I like Florida, truly, is January, Feb, and parts of March. Best, Michael Shaara". The third photocopied letter is undated on Shaara's Melbourne FL personal stationay: "Sorry this took so long. I just haven't been here much. You may like to know I signed a movie option on The Herald -- although I did that four times with The Killer Angels and it hasn't worked out yet. Again -- sorry. Michael Shaara". Novel basis for 1993 film "Gettysburg". Laid-in is a photo-card SIGNED by actor MORGAN SHEPPARD who played 'Maj. General Isaac Trimble' in the film. A photo-card SIGNED by RICHARD ANDERSON (played 'General George Meade'. A photo-card SIGNED and inscribed by KEVIN CONWAY (played 'Sgt. Buster Kilrain').
