Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Set of four proof copies, each flat signed by the author to the title page. Midnight for Charlie Bone has been read (the spine has reading creases but is not cracked / broken). The others appear unread, though with shelf-wear to The Time Twister and The Castle of Mirrors (The Blue B…oa is in excellent condition): The Time Twister has minor shelf-wear, The Castle of Mirrors has creases to bottom corners of front and back covers. All first impressions, except The Time Twister which appears to be a second impression - odd for a proof copy, perhaps a printing error, but I thought I should point it out (the Contents page has all the chapter page numbers as 000 and the cover is marked front and back as a proof copy). The photographs attached to this listing highlight attributes and condition. Language: eng Language: eng. Signed by Author(s).

First edition, number 195 of 1,050 copies, presentation copy from the King to his State Chamberlain, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Douglas Dawson from George R.I. Christmas 1922". Dawson (1854-1933) joined the court in 1903 following a military career. He served as Master of Ceremonies from 1903 to 1907, as Comptroll…er in the Lord Chamberlain's Department from 1907 to 1920, and as State Chamberlain from 1920 to 1924. His bookplate is in the first two volumes. This was the most important work of the English antiquary Hope, and the largest project of his life. He began it in 1893 with Queen Victoria's approval, continued it through Edward VII's reign, and finished it under George V, whereupon he received a knighthood. The book "remains to this day the most comprehensive study of any English castle ever undertaken" (Munby, Barber, & Brown, p. 13). Vast in scope and sumptuous in design, "It has been printed from new type on pure rag paper, specially made for this edition. It is illustrated by exquisite reproductions in colour of drawings by Paul Sandby; by a large number of collotype plates reproducing a unique collection of original drawings, engravings and photographs which show the castle at every stage of its development; as well as by beautiful woodcuts prepared expressly by the great engraver Orlando Jewitt. [the map volumes contains] a complete series of plans, specially printed in fourteen colours, which show the dates of all the buildings in the Castle and their successive changes" (advertisement, in Country Life, 29 November 1913). The work is rarely encountered in commerce with the map volume. Julian Munby, Richard Barber, & Richard Brown, Edward III's Round Table at Windsor, 2007. 3 vols (2 text, 1 map), imperial quarto. Text vol. with plates throughout; 8 loose large folding maps in map vol. Original half vellum, spines lettered in gilt, blue paper-covered sides, blue endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Text volumes with light soiling to vellum, minor foxing, very good copies; map volume stained, with the internal flaps detached, maps with slight splits along folds; good only.
