Heinrich Mann als einer der frühen Übersetzer gibt in seinem Roman-Vorwort eine treffende Charakterisierung dessen, was der Dichter sozusagen briefdokumentarisch hat belegen wollen: ein Sittenbild der sogenannten guten Gesellschaft Frankreichs, unmittelbar vor der französischen Revolution. Er zeigt diese Gesellschaft vor ihrem Zusammenbruch, eine Aristokratie, deren Lebensgrundlage nicht viel anderes ist als Müßiggang; eine gesellschaftliche Schicht, die ohne Ehrgeiz, ohne höhere geistige Interessen, ohne Selbstzucht in den Tag hineinlebt. Das beherrschende Gesell-schaftsspiel ist die Liebe, "unglaublich prickelnd, weil es immer im Begriff steht, ernst zu werden und den Kopf zu kosten", was den ertappten Liebhaber anlangt; während die Frau vom gehörnten Ehemann sehr rasch zu lebenslanger Buße ins Kloster verdammt werden kann. Das ist die brutale Kehrseite des "heiteren Rokoko", jener Welt einer Salon-Kultur, die durch Mozarts Musik veredelt, in unserem Bewußtsein "verklärt, verniedlicht, übergoldet weiterlebt". Die Handlung des Stücks lehnt sich eng an die Romanhandlung an: zwei hochadlige Angehörige der vornehmen Pariser Gesellschaft, die schöne und - wie jedermann glaubt - äußerst sittsame Marquise von Merteuil und ihr eleganter, weltmännisch auftretender einstiger Geliebter, der Vicomte von Valmont, sind ein Schurkenpaar von sozusagen exquisiter Amoralität. Sie verabreden miteinander, um persönliche Rachegelüste zu befriedigen, aber auch einfach aus Müßiggang und hybridem Spieltrieb, eine seit kurzem glücklich verheiratete, gläubige Frau zu Fall zu bringen, sie durch langsame Qualen geriebener Verführung hindurch ins Verderben und in den Tod zu treiben. In der gleichen Zeit wird ein junges Mädchen, Cecile, nach strenger Klostererziehung nun in die Welt versetzt, von den beiden, ohne daß sie ahnt, was mit ihr geschieht, zum Zeitvertreib und als nervenkitzelndes Experiment bis zu den niedrigsten Verrichtungen einer verderbten Dirne gebracht. Der böse Plan gelingt - doch die Rechnung geht nicht ganz auf. Die gequälte Frau stirbt an gebrochenem Herzen, das junge Mädchen kehrt reumütig ins Kloster zurück, fassungslos ernüchtert und lebensuntauglich. Das Schauspiel läßt auch einen nicht vermuteten, aber umso zeitgemäßeren Aspekt sichtbar werden: obwohl die Libertinage in jener aristokratischen Gesellschaft zum Prinzip erhoben wird, hat dennoch der MANN als der beherrschende, die FRAU trotz zugestandener Freiheiten als der ihm stets untergeordnete Teil zu gelten. So offenbart sich auf der Bühne die große, wenngleich ruchlose Heldin des Stücks, die Marquise von Merteuil, als das, was ihr schon als Romanfigur zu recht zugeschrieben worden ist: die "erste Emanzipierte der Weltliteratur" (Helmut Knufmann), in der Rolle einer unvergleichlichen, einer unvergleichbaren Frau, die in ihrem Aufbegehren , in ihrer Revolte dennoch scheitert. In dem Stück spielt die Verwendung von Briefen, Bülets, eine gewichtige Rolle; sie sind hier nicht nur wesentliches Erzählmittel, sondern ebenso notwendiges Element der Handlung.
