Frontispiece (b/w portrait of Lapérouse). Illustrated with 21 full-page b/w photographs, 4 plans and maps. Index. Deckle fore and lower edges. "First visit of a foreigner to missionary establishments in Upper California". "French navigator Jean-Francois Galaup de LaPérouse had distinguished himself during the war with England between 1778 and 1783, serving admirably in various parts of the world, and especially on the eastern coasts of Canada and in Hudson's Bay. His ill-fated expedition to the Pacific and along the west coast of North America was intended to rival those conducted by James Cook for the English. "La Pérouse sailed from France in 1785, with the frigates Astrolabe and Boussole, to the Pacific and the west coast of America. He was to examine such parts of the region as had not been explored by Captain Cook; to seek for an interoceanic passage; to make scientific observations on the various countries, peoples, and products; to obtain reliable information about the fur trade and the extent of the Spanish settlements in California; and to promote in general the inducements for French enterprise in that quarter. The result was that LaPérousse made a valuable contribution to the history of geographical discovery, particularly with regard to the American coast and the natives of America. His labors there furnished geographers with results whereby they could check the charts of Russian, English, and Spanish navigators. The expedition visited, and accounts are given of, Easter Island, Hawaii, Macao, Formosa, the Aleutian Islands, Samoa, Tonga, and Australia" (Hill). EPHEMERA : J.H. Photo attached This is an unorthodox biography about an unorthodox adventurer, the life story of a real red-blooded hero, truly captivated by the call of the sea. Laperouse was a notable hero who looms up in French navel history as Captain James Cook does in British history. Laperouse not only took part in the American Revolutionary War and in the French and British fight for India, he also was the first European other than a Spaniard to visit California missions. 25 interesting-arousing photographs and sketches, some of them contemporary, add considerably to the value of the book.

An aacount of archaeological excavations between 1999 and 2003. Vanikoro is an island in the Santa Cruz group and part of the Temotu Province of Solomon Islands. The French explorer Jean-François de La Pérouse was stranded on Vanikoro after both his vessels, La Boussole and the Astrolabe, struck the then unknown reefs of the island in 1788. It is reported that some of the men were killed by the local inhabitants, while the surviving sailors built a smaller vessel and left the island, but were never seen again. Those that remained on the island died before the wreck site was discovered in 1826. Signed by Author(s).

Couverture rigide. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition, never translated into english, and first issue of the fine steel engravings by Sainson. The illustrations are distributed as follows: for the first volume: 141 plates hors-texte including a frontispiece, and 3 folding maps (Hawaii, Tahiti, and a general map of the voyages). for the second volume: 136 plates hors-texte, including a frontispiece, and 4 folding maps (Tonga Islands, Hawaii, Pacific Ocean, general map). Bindings in emerald green half polished sheep. Spines with four raised bands, decorated with rocaille tools. Red morocco title labels. Spines uniformly lightened. Minor rubbing. The steel-engraved plates, after drawings by M. de Sainson, draughtsman of the Voyage of the Astrolabe, depict various peoples from around the world, means of transport by land and sea, animals and plants, landscapes, etc. None of the bibliographies specifies the exact number of engravings. The table at the end of volume II clarifies the matter: the plates appear either as double-page plates (72 and 70 respectively, not counting the portrait frontispieces), or as single-page plates, numbering 144 and 140, as in the present copy. Moreover, many copies contain duplicates, which accounts for the considerable discrepancies encountered in collation. Some foxing. Title page of volume I with yellowing along the inner margin caused by the presence of restoration adhesives on the verso of the leaf. * 2 forts vol. in-4 ; 1) 2 ff. n. ch., VIII pp., 576 pp., texte sur deux colonnes, 145 planches hors texte dont un frontispice (relié p.
