La única parte que realmente disfrutaba, eran los juicios penales, y el desarrollo de la estrategía a seguir en un juicio. En su tiempo libre, Gardner comenzó a escribir para las revistas policíacas que también albergaban a autores como Dashiell Hammett y Raymond Chandler.
