From the introduction: "This volume is devoted exclusively to English grammars written in English by Englishmen, Americans, and in one or two cases foreigners, as well as a very few grammars written in Latin by native speakers.… The material included corresponds to that section in Kennedy's bibliography extending from nos. 5687 to 5994, but I have adopted a more rigorous definition of what constitutes a grammar than did Kennedy. Thus, the following sorts of books are specifically excluded here : (1) spelling-books containing abstracts of grammar ; (2) miscellaneous works, epistolary manuals, &c, containing brief grammars ; (3) dictionaries containing grammars ; (4) polyglot grammars; ( 5) grammars of English written in foreign languages, as well as grammars written in Latin by foreigners and published abroad." Even with these exclusions, there are listed here over 1200 items - nearly four times the number reported in the relevant section of Kennedy's bibliography. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling, but are actually remarkably clean. There is some light rubbing to the edges, but no serious creases or tears. The spine has a light vertical reading crease but is square and tight. The covers, including the spine, show some browning and fading (please see scans). Internally also very good with a previous owner's name in red biro on the half-title page, but no other inscriptions or annotations. No tears or creases.
