Front hinge split front board FRAGILE. Rear hinge creased. Head and tail of spine scuffed with tearing and rubbed leather. Gilt lettering and deco normally dulled, but overall attractive and legible. All edges of text-block gilt. Ownership bookplates on front paste-down: "W. G. Bowdoin" and "Harry Little". Pasted-in note on top edge of front paste-down: "Illustrations by Sartain". Toning and age-staining through text-block, mostly around plates. Binding intact, front hinge fragile. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Reynell Coates (1802 - 1886) was an American physician, scientist, teacher, poet and politician. He was the editor of Graham's Magazine and contributed to the other literary journals of the time, both in prose and in verse. From 1845, he edited Leaflets of Memory: An Illuminated Annual, an annual illustrated collection of short stories and verse, of which eleven volumes are known. Altemus binding in full brown leather with gilt decorated boards and spine, with floral corner decorations in green. All edges gilt. Binding rubbed at the edges and joints, not bad really and the book still quite lovely. Light foxing throughout, pretty exclusively to the engraved illustrations and their guards, the second blank neatly excised, and a previous owner's name scratched out neatly on the presentation page, otherwise a nice attractive copy, with all the lithographs and mezzotints present.

Bound in contemporary pebble-grained red morocco with an elaborate design stamped in gilt and including four recessed circular devices embossed in blind on both covers, gilt spine, cream colored glazed endpapers, all edges gilt. The boards and spine show signs of wear particularly along the edges, endpapers lightly soiled, and scattered foxing particularly on the illustrations, still a sound very good copy.
