With six engraved plates including the frontispiece. Maria Hack (1777-1844) was an educational writer. Maria Hack's youngest brother, Bernard Barton (17841849), the friend of Charles Lamb and a minor poet, recalled that in his youth his sister had been "a sort of oracle to me". Her enthusiasm for the education of children extended beyond her own family: in 1812 she published First Lessons in English Grammar, and a variety of other educational works for children followed.
