Die österreichische Schriftstellerin, Literaturkritikerin und Übersetzerin Marie Herzfeld (1855-1940) widmete sich in den 1880er Jahren zunächst der skandinavischen Literatur und bringt sie in Übersetzungen und Abhandlungen dem Lesepublikum näher. Mit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts konzentrierte sie sich auf die italienische Renaissance und besonders Leonardo da Vinci, zu dem sie vorliegende Monographie veröffentlichte. - Die Widmungsträgerin ist die Salonniére Malwine von Dutschka. In derem Salon spielte der spätere Burgtheaterdirektor Baron von Berger eine Art Hausherrenrolle.
