One page, 8vo, bifolium, edges dusted ow good. Lord Crewe (his superior in the India Office) has asked him to respond to T. Edwards Jones's question about Crewe's father's Blake collection. "He would have been pleased to be of assistance to you in regard to your lecture on William Blake, but he fears that his father's collection of Blake drawings was disposed of some years ago & that the few Blake possessions which he still has are not of significant interest to make it worth your while to see them for the object which you have in view." Note: A sale of William Blake drawings belonging to Lord Crewe is recorded at Sothebys in 1903.

'Re candlesticks. | The dean does not want candlesticks for the Altar. | But, in the place of those hideous bronze things in fornt of the Altar I have designend, and Pegram the sculptor has modelled a sketch, a really fine thing. | I will not write a rigmarole but will you come here next Saty & we will drive up to Pegram & see the model - | The money matters I will explain.'.

Two pages, 12mo, bifolium, minor staining, good condition. Text: "Rugby School Chapel was consecrated. Testes adsunt [witnesses] Anstey & Buckett. | The offertory money is given | 1. (and mainly) to the Parish Clegy | 2. To Birmingham Hospital | 3. To local medical men for Sick Poor. | It amounts to £50 a year always, & sometimes to £70 or 380, of which mopst goes to 1, least to 3. | I heard from MacInnes a few days ago. His wife is going up to London for her approaching confinement. I see him sometimes, but wish we could meet oftener. | I wish very much you would pay Rugby a visit. Has Mrs Salt ever seen it? Could not we induce you to stop here on your way to or from London. We should be very glad if we could. [Subscription]". Light vertical crease in the left margin and light wear at the corners, blank verso with modest offsetting from the cardboard stiffener, just about near fine in the original mailing envelope.

Unsigned, and in Hayley's untidy hand. Reads: 'Tuesday | 5 oclock | I have not been able to call on the Sheffield Travellers today but having caught a Frank from my noble Friend of Petworth I will dispatch my Servant without losing another post | adio'. Hayley later introduced his friend Miss Harriet Poole ('the Lady of Lavant') to William Blake, who would join him on visits to her villa in Lavant.

With 6 wood-engravings, 4 printed on Japan tissue, all being versions of Blake's face. Baskin has additionally signed 5 of the engravings, including all the ones on Japan tissue. Original marbled wrappers, printed label on upper cover. Light edgewear as is common to this title, Bitter's name label, which establishes provenance but is otherwise less than attractive, on front flap. A very good copy.

Naked we came here, naked of Natural things, & naked we shall return; but while clothed with the Divine Mercy, we are richly clothed in Spiritual & suffer all the rest gladly."
