Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light bumping. Collected and edited by Dorothy Lobrano Guth. Jacket design by Muriel Nasser. E.B. White was a distinguished…American essayist, novelist, and stylist whose work helped shape twentieth-century American letters. Best known for his contributions to The New Yorker and for his beloved childrenâs booksâ"including Charlotteâs Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swanâ"White combined simplicity of expression with emotional depth and intellectual precision. His prose, marked by clarity and restraint, reflects a deep humanism and a sensitivity to the natural world. hardcover. Condition: Good. Privately Published; Unknown, [1913]. Hardcover. Inscribed to Malcolm Storer directly on front free endpaper by William K. Bixby (collector of art and rare books and is known for his significant philanthropic contributions around the St. Louis area). Mr. Bixby, with his usual good taste and good fortu…ne, has obtained one of the most charming letters from Maria White, the early love and first wife of the poet Lowell, to her slightly elder friend, the wife of the prose poet, Nathaniel Hawthorne. It was written from Philadelphia, whither the young couple had gone the year after their marriage in 1844, as a favorable city for Lowells chosen pursuit of poet and magazine writer. At their marriage, Lowell was twenty-five and Miss White (of Watertown) was twenty-three. They did not become acquainted until in 1839-40, though their homes were hardly more than a mile apart?Lowell living with his father, the Reverend Doctor Lowell, at Elmwood, an old Tory mansion, which had become the property of Gerry, one of the Signers of the Declaration, after the Revolution; and from his family it came to Dr. Lowell. Miss White lived at home, in a house with a fine garden, along the highway from Mount Auburn to Watertown Village. Before Lowell met her, he was inclined to be a gay and thoughtless youth, who had neglected his duties in Harvard, where he graduated in 1838, a year after Thoreau; and, as Class Poet, had satirized Emerson and the serious reformers of the period, in verse of the traditional type, but with far less point than Doctor Holmes used in similar satire. Good, tan boards, green spine, binding intact, some handling/scuffing and a bit of soiling to boards, abrasions to board corners, uncut pages, age toning to pages, rubbing along board edges, some scattered foxing throughout, bit fraying to spine edges, bowed boards, dent top board edges and bottom rear board edge, without Dust wrapper. A good copy. 8vo[octavo or approx. 6 x 9 inches]. 10pp. We pack securely and ship daily with delivery confirmation on every book. The picture on the listing page is of the actual book for sale. Additional Scan(s) are available for any item, please inquire. Please note: Oversized books/sets MAY require additional postage then what is quoted for 2.2lb book. Signed by Other.
