Signed by Cook in his usual fashion of crossing out his printed name on the title page, writing his name in ink, along with the recipient's name and the date - in this instance April 1968. "Doc Cook" was a Thoreau expert of high order who also served as president of the Thoreau Society. As for The Middlebury professor's "Check List of Thoreau Items" held by the college's Abernethy Library, it contains nothing less than Thoreau's own copy of Walden. Dust jacket is now preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
