A very fine copy of the True First Issue, with the following errors; p. 182, nine lines up 'Baltic' (corrected to 'Balkan'), p. 495 letter signed T. E. L [Lawrence] (corrected to 'T. E. S'[haw]). Clear, removable, archival protective sleeve fitted to dust-jacket. E. M. Forster first attempted editing the letters for publication, but gave up the effort. It fell to Garnett to compile this 1938 edition, which is the major collection, rivalled and supplemented only by 'Home Letters of T. E. Lawrence and his Brothers', (1954). "This collection of letters, edited by [T.E. Lawrence's] brother M.R. Lawrence, supplements the David Garnett collection of 1938. The letters included here for the most part cover his early years; fully two thirds of those included are from before the war. The two collections provide a remarkable picture of the range and scope of Lawrence's letter-writing from his youth to the end of his life. The letters of his brothers Frank and Will, both of whom died in the First World War, are also included. The whole reflects what was a truly remarkable family. This collection is a primary source for the pre-war correspondence of Lawrence" (O'Brien, Bibliography, pp. 167-168). Together with: A two-page autograph letter by John Gideon Wilson, eminent British bookseller at Bumpus on their printed stationery, signed and dated 1954 to one Kathleen Steel of Wool in Dorset about this publication, members of the family of T. E. Lawrence, and Richard Aldington's imminent publication of the 'slanderous' book Lawrence of Arabia: A Biographical Enquiry, which came out the following year. This unpublished letter sent together with the Home Letters opens "glad you have succumbed to the Home Letters; it is a well made and worthy book . My visit to the Cottage [Clouds Hill in Dorset, T.E. Lawrence's home until his death in 1935] was a passing one, in fact, I doubt if at the time it was open; but I will see it one day . One slanderous book by Aldington is now announced for October. A. W. Lawrence [TEL's brother] was home from Gold Coast last week; he was concerned, I think, with the effect of Aldington on his mother. My own feeling is that he needn't worry. A. W. is a clever fellow; but I never found him so open as T. E. - bless his memory". The 'slanderous' book actually came out in 1955, triggering a storm of controversy and almost (in modern terms) hate campaigns. Before Aldington there were only hagiographies about Lawrence. At the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, Texas "is a section containing the correspondence of John G[ideon] Wilson, of J.& E. Bumpus bookstore, concerning the sale and publication of Lawrence's works covering the years 1924 through 1949 . Material under the heading for B. H. Liddell Hart, author of T. E. Lawrence in Arabia and After (1934), contains the extensive correspondence during the years 1951 to 1960 concerning the controversy surrounding the publication of Richard Aldington's book, Lawrence of Arabia: A Biographical Inquiry" (T. First US edition, signed limited issue, number 419 of 1,000 copies. These works collect Lawrence's correspondence with two of his most famous biographers. The letters contained in these two works span 1920-35, revealing Lawrence's close connection with his biographers and his attempts to carefully control his reputation. The corrections to both Graves's and Liddell Hart's manuscripts take the form of strikethroughs and additions in italics, showing both Lawrence's attention to detail and his skill as a writer. Other matters are also discussed, such as Lawrence's opinions on the publication of I, Claudius (pp. 174-79 in Graves). The frontispiece in Graves is based on a pen-and-ink sketch he bought at the Caledonian Market. Robert Graves published the greatly successful biography Lawrence and the Arabs in 1927. First edition, limited to 50 copies. O'Brien A219. *The Liddell Hart copy, with his bookplate on the upper pastedown. Later from the libraries of Terence J. D. Linn, and (most recently) David Levine, Sydney, with their book labels on lower pastedown. B. H. Liddell Hart was a staunch admirer, friend (and later biographer) of T. E. Lawrence. The 50 copies were printed for Harley Granville-Barker to give as Christmas presents, after which the type was distributed. O'Brien (and Ridler before him) list this as a product of the Corvinus Press, but Nash & Flavell state 'There is nothing in the type, paper, or design to suggest that this item was printed at Red Lion Court, and I suspect that Ridler added it to the Corvinus canon simply because it was a Lawrence item, published during the lifetime of the Press, in which there was no explicit mention of another printer's name. O'Brien seems to have accepted Ridler's attribution without question' [The Corvinus Press, p. 173]. Hartley Granville-Barker (1877-1946) was an English actor, playwright, director and producer. The earliest letter, from late 1923, begins with a reference to Lawrence reading one of his plays and then asking 'whether you would agree to try and read my book' [Seven Pillars of Wisdom]. The print is awful (very small, and squalid, and dazing in the eyes), the punctuation nil, the style priggish, the sense hysterical. But it is easy to skip, and after all, I don't ask people to read it, only to try'. Four of the other letters also include reference to 'that awful book of mine' and to the subscription process for the book. (Granville-Baker was one of the subscribers). The letters, ranging in date from December 1923 to December 1932, were all written as 'T. E. Shaw'. Signed.…
