Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Bound in illustrated pale blue wraps with a loose cover and some spine is missing. With an inscription from the author in french with a watercolor sketch of a cityscape and reflection with a large tree in front of it and is painted in different colors attributed to the artist on the half-title page. There is some foxing to the text, although the color plates are largely unaffected. Signed by Author(s).

Reliure strictement de l'époque signée Pagnant plein vélin à la bradel à petits rabats, tête dorée, non rogné (relié sur brochure), les deux plats de couverture conservés, riche décor doré couvrant les plats et le dos à la façon des reliures du XVIIe siècle. Excellent état. Intérieur parfait. Tirage à 525 exemplaires. Celui-ci, 1 des rarissimes 25 exemplaires de tête sur Japon, celui-ci portant à la plume le n°10 et paraphé des initiales de l'auteur éditeur. Le volume a été imprimé à Tours chez Deslis Frères. Violent pamphlet dirigé par le bouquiniste bibliographe Antoine Laporte contre son ennemi juré Octave uzanne, à propos du livre de ce dernier sur les bouquinistes des quais de la Seine à Paris. Antoine Laporte y avait été maltraité par Uzanne qui l'avait désigné comme un moine défroqué . Ce sont donc 82 pages de bile fumante et cuisante qui se déversent ici en totale liberté sur beau papier Japon pour l'occasion de cet exemplaire. Outre le côté pamphlétaire, ce livret est un rare témoignage des années 1880-1890 sur la vie des bouquinistes des quais, leurs us et coutumes, le tout rédigé avec verve et style par un membre de la confrérie. Rarissime sur ce papier. Superbe exemplaire très joliment habillé par Edouard Pagnant. Pagnant, Edouard (1852-1916), relieur-doreur. Né en 1852, commence son apprentissage à 12 ans chez Camille Lavache, puis rentre comme jeune ouvrier dans la maison Chambolle-Duru où il reste 7 ans. Pagnant travaille ensuite successivement chez Parisot, Lesort, Weber et Marmin. En 1876, il s'établit rue Saint-Dominique et, en 1881, il joint à sa maison celle de Marmin. Il s'installe ensuite au 30 rue Jacob, où il meurt le 28 janvier 1916. Le travail de M. Edouard Pagnant est recommandé par Octave Uzanne dans son ouvrage intitulé La reliure moderne artistique et fantaisiste publié en 1887, ouvrage dans lequel plusieurs reliures signées de son nom sont reproduites en fac-similé. L'édition courante sur papier vélin (500 ex.) se trouve déjà difficilement ! Très rare dans cette superbe reliure d'époque décorée. Signé par l'auteur.

The beautiful original wrappers with elaborate vignettes in gilt and colour by Paul Avril and printed on chine are well preserved. 'Octave Uzanne's activities in the service of books were varied and extensive . He intended them [this volume and 'L'Ombrelle &c.'] as the beginning of a series of 'books of the boudoir', which would eventually provide a comprehensive history of feminine adornment ('L'Eventail, pg. 4) . Certainly Avril, who was a witty and ingenious artist, took full advantage of Uzanne's anecdotal chronicle as he 'ransacked the ages and spoiled the climes' in his illustrations. They are vignettes of different shapes and sizes, printed in various colors. The result is an elegant pastiche of rococo bookmaking, exactly to the taste of the bibliophiles of his day.' When this work appeared, Uzanne (1852-1931) was in full stride as a leader of the Paris circle of men and women interested in handsomely illustrated, printed, and bound works of literature. In 1880 he launched Miscellances bibliographiques and, soon after Son altesse la femme appeared. he introduced the influential periodicals Le Livre, Le Livre moderne, and L'Art et l'Id?e. In 1889, he took part in the creation of a publishing company, the "League of Contemporary Bibliophiles." He counted among his friends the artists Jean Lorrain, Barbey d'Aurevilly, and Remy de Gourmont. Paris: A. Quantin, 1882. Royal 8vo. FIRST EDITION. Bound in full dark Brown levant crushed morocco signed by Pawson and Nicholson of London, with the spine with four raised band with gilt across each, gilt-framed and heavily ornamented spine panels with author/title in 2nd panel and date at bottom of spine, boards with triple gilt fillet, double gilt rule along all board edges, densely gilt-tooled inner dentelles and richly marbled endpapers, all edges gilt with a silk page marker. PAGINATION: Full page multi-chrome illustration, vi, 143, [1], gilt-on-black tailpiece illustrations throughout the text printed on superb paper in the art nouveau. an art nouveau book creation in fine condition in a signed binding by a famous house in London. Sumptuously bound by MATTHEWS in full crushed light brown morocco with blind-stamped rules, raised bands, bound to a Jansenist style, with enormously lavish and stunning wide gilt decorated dentelles tooled with fillets, scrolling foliage, fan tools, all around a central doublure inset light gray silk pastedown, the front with red and black printed design incorporating the author and illustrator's name and title in illustration (i.e. on silk), and the rear with related design without lettering. The two free endpapers are formed from the original illustrated endpapers. The text volume, numbered 46, is ONE OF 100 COPIES, printed on "papier du Japon," the suite of proofs are also printed on Japan paper. This is Uzannne's best-known work and a classic example of a sumptuously illustrated work published in a small edition, where the author worked in close collaboration with the illustrator. Proofs before text of the tinted illustrations, all by Paul Avril. Title printed in red and black with a vignetter in blue, half-title is signed by Paul Avril. A wonderful binding, with the Jansenist concept of plain outside and burst of decoration on the inside. Housed in contemporary marbled-covered slipcase. Binding and book are fine withlight wearing on outer joint of front cover (not weakening). A lasting rarity thus.
