PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, Paul Leni's CAT AND THE CANARY, THE MAN WHO LAUGHED, and many other silent film classics. This volume was published just as the talkie era was coming into its own, with Universal continuing to make a mark in the horror genre with DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN, although this biography is focused almost entirely on Laemmle's personal life and his participation in the development of the film industry in the silent era.

Inscribed by Drinkwater in year of publication: "For Alec and Sylvia Kenward, with all good wishes for luck and happiness, from John Drinkwater. London, June 28, 1931". Laemmle was born in Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1884. He was a pioneer in American film making, and founded Universal Studios in 1912.
