Here is a scare book, an edition rarely seen on the open market -- "Light On The Path : A Treatise Written for the Personal Use of Those Who Are Ignorant of the Eastern Wisdom, and Who Desire to Enter Within Its Influence: A Treatise", Written Down by M. C. This rare 1908 edition was issued only with those initials M. C. , thus being essentially anonymous. But the world quickly knew that the author was Mabel Collins. The book, bound in red leather, with a small gilt cartouche in the upper corner, which depicts a gateway, with the rising sun shining through along a path. At the top, just over the title is an Egyptian style winged sun. The book was issued in 1908 by the Theosophical Publishing Company, in New York. It includes Collins' essay on Karma. Occult tradition has it that Collins transcribed the words transmitted to her by an ascended "Master of Wisdom" known as Master Hilarion. But Collins, herself, denied this, saying that she wrote the book on her own. She was, for a while connected with the Theosophical Society, but left the Society in 1889. "Light on the Path was first published in 1886. TITLE : Light On The Path : A Treatise Written for the Personal Use of Those Who Are Ignorant of the Eastern Wisdom, and Who Desire to Enter Within Its Influence: A Treatise AUTHOR : M.C. (Minna Mabel Collins, 1851 - 1927) IMPRINT : Theosophical Publishing Company PLACE : 224 Lenox Ave., New York DATE : 1908 EDITION : Reprint, unstated as to printing. STATUS : Scarce - a Rare Early Edition DETAILS : Petite book, measuring (vis-a-vis the outer dimensions of the binding) approx. 3 7/8" x 5 1/2", full leather binding with small gilt cartouche (described above) and rounded fore-edge corners; dense floral repeating pattern for end-papers, printed in gilt and green; text-block edges are dyed red and have rounded fore-edge corners; 92 pages, plus 2 pages of publisher's promotional ads. CONDITION -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Spine extremities display erosion (especially at the bottom) and small loss to leather; joints and board edges are abraded, with small areas exhibiting surface loss (leather is rubbed); gilt cartouche is bright; front board has mild surface rub, but displays nicely; rear board displays some vague spotting (when held at a certain angle to the light, these exhibit as vague dark spots); there is also, on the rear cover a vertical mark going the full length, top to bottom - this is not quite a scratch nor is it quite a crease, but it is visible. On the whole the exterior presents well. BINDING -- Still tight. INTERIOR -- There is a small dark spot at the top edge of the title page - this seems like a production effect, else the interior is clean and free of marking. There are no signatures.
