First edition of this early personal account of trench warfare on the Western Front during the First World War, scarce in the jacket. "Written at the Front within sound of the German guns" (preface), the book seeks to enlighten domestic readers of the conditions in battle; it presents an optimistic, heroic depiction of British soldiers' lives and combat in Flanders. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in red and black. With dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket (Robertson's, Melbourne) to front pastedown; faint contemporary ink ownership signature to front panel of jacket and title page. Foxing to edges and contents, else square and sharp; unclipped jacket with tiny chips at extremities else well-preserved: a near-fine copy in near-fine jacket.
