Bel exemplaire. Octavo, late eighteenth or early nineteenth century polished green morocco gilt, bit worn, ends of spine lightly chipped, title bit foxed and trifle dust soiled, early initials and small ink smudge on title, small neat wormtrail in bottom blank edge of first several gatherings disappears, then later reappears, strays briefly into text in parts of five gatherings not affecting legibility. All edges gilt, gilt arms of the Duke of Sutherland on front cover, quite decent. This major work by Henri Estienne II is anti-Catholic satire of contemporary society, and is worthy of Rabelais, a contemporary of Estienne's whom Estienne praises in an interesting critical notice in this work. Referred to as Henry Estienne's "Most Popular Book," this landmark of French Renaissance prose style promptly went through several editions, was translated into English and enjoyed occasional reprintings for the next three centuries. Adams S 1774; not in Brunet; not in Graesse; not in Schreiber The Estiennes. Because of the value of this item, extra postal insurance or registry fees may be required.

(Renouard I, 126 - Schreiber, 161 et 231 pour notre tirage : « one of the monuments of 16th-century French prose, and a master-piece of the satirical genre » - Caillet, II, 3692 - Dorbon, 1527 (pour l'édition de 1607) - Brunet II, 1076).
