The yellow pictoral cloth boards are very clean indeed, as are the inner pages that a free of any foxing spots or finger marks. No previous owner names or inscriptions are present. The price clipped, second state dust wrapper, with reviews to the front flap is also in near fine condition with no tears or loss present. Tiny creasing to the spine tips, else an exceptionally well preserved example. A first edition collaboration between author Grahame Greene and illustrator Dorothy Glover, who appeared under the pseudonym "Dorothy Craigie.". Signed by Author(s).

First Ardizzone editions, Steamroller signed by the author on the title page. Edward Ardizzone illustrated numerous children's classics, including Stig of The Dump and the Nurse Matilda books. The Little Train (1946) was first published under the name of the original illustrator and Greene's lover, Dorothy Craigie, and was not credited to Greene until the 1950s. 4 works, oblong quarto. Colour illustrations. Original illustrated boards, titles to front cover and spine in black. With dust jacket. Colours bright, rubbing to board extremities, Steamroller lightly foxed, Fire Engine boards a little splayed; jackets edge-worn, creased, and with occasional faint marks, a little loss to head of Fire Engine spine, Steamroller jacket price-clipped and with publisher's price label, the rest unclipped: very good copies in like jackets.

First edition, first impression, of the first of Greene's children's books, inscribed by the illustrator, "My love to you, Dorothy Craigie", on the title page. All four of Graham Greene's children's books were illustrated by Craigie. The first two books, the present work and The Little Fire Engine (1950), were not credited to him until the 1950s. This is in the second state jacket, with reviews on the front flap. Oblong quarto. Illustrated by Craigie. Original decorated yellow cloth, titles and train motifs to covers in black, green and red, top edge yellow, map endpapers. With dust jacket. Covers very gently bowed, slight foxing to endpapers, otherwise clean and bright. A very good copy in the toned jacket, very slight chips to tips and spine ends, short closed tear to foot of spine, another to foot of front panel, small chip and slight abrasion to head of front panel.
