"This is the story of the life of a priest of the Church of England who was born in 1912 in humble circumstances, the son of a coal miner, and whose first calling was that of a carpenter. At the age of seventeen he began theological training with the Society of the Sacred Mission and became a member of the community in 1933. He remained in the Society for almost twenty years. On ordination, in 1936, he was sent to work in South Africa. During the war, he served as a chaplain to African troops in the Middle East and Italy. At the end of hostilities he returned to mission work in Lesotho and South Africa where he became deeply involved in the socio-economic affairs of the black population. His views on apartheid and politics are clearly stated in this work and his attitude towards his parishioners is far from patronising. . The book is given a further dimension in a foreword written by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in which he discusses the role of missionaries in Southern Africa.".
