George Salter designed jacket, white background darkened on the spine, pretty clean elsewhere. DJ protected with mylar sleeve. Text block and pages clean throughout. Title page dated 1962. Copyright page says this is the 2nd impression, and calls this The 1962 Edition. It was first published in the UK in 1954 and in the US in 1955. By 1962 (this edition) the published was already calling it a Modern Classic (on the front cover). 243 pages + biography of author. This copy has a green piece of paper tipped in at the front, slightly smaller than the pages of this book, signed by William Golding. Beneath his name, he's written Bowerchalke UK (where he moved in 1958). The page with the signature has been neatly tipped in at the front, between the endpapers of this volume, which are also green. A first edition, first printing of 'Lord of the Flies' published by Faber in 1954. A very good book with a stain to the lower front cover - has slightly bled onto the top edge of the pages. White titles on red cloth clear and bright. In the very good second issue dust wrapper (reviews to both flaps) - Edge worn with chipping. Not price clipped showing 12s 6d to the corner of the front flap. Some neat internal repair. Accompanied by the first Faber paperback - in very good, generally worn and browned condition - SIGNED to the front endpaper without dedication by Golding. Above, is the name of his close friend, John Jones. John and Jean Jones were close friends with Golding. The couple were prominent members of the mid-20th century Oxford literary scene, which also included J.R.R. Tolkien and Iris Murdoch. John was an eminent academic, a Fellow of Merton College, Oxford, and served as the University's Professor of Poetry from 1978 to 1983. He was a literary critic and a respected figure in the academic community. Jean was a painter and artist. She often painted the landscapes of Devon, which provided an escape from the intense academic life in Oxford. Though she painted a portrait of William Golding and had a solo exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in 1980, her work did not achieve the same recognition as her literary friends during her lifetime. The Jean Jones Estate was established in 2019 to research and promote her life and work. Golding purchased one of Jean Jones' paintings, and after her death, this work was in the possession of the Golding estate. Their correspondence and the relationships within this literary circle are documented in biographies and other materials related to their lives. Both books were the property of Jon and Jean Jones.

Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition, first printing. An advance presentation copy inscribed by William Golding to his next-door neighbors and dated ten days before publication, reading "To Mr and Mrs Nelles with the author's regards 7/9/54" with his name not signed. Bound in original red cloth with titles in white on spine. Near Fine with slight fading to cloth, bleeding to edges of front paste down and several tiny spots to textblock edge. In a Very Good or better unclipped dust jacket with light bleeding from cloth to blindside, light waviness to front panel, light edge wear, short tear at bottom of front spine joint and two short splits to rear spine joint. An allegorical tale of children stranded on a coral island and their disastrous attempt to govern themselves. It was Golding's first novel, who was a middle-aged school teacher when he wrote it. After reading an unrealistic story of stranded youth, he commented to his wife he could do better. He drew upon on his experience as a school teacher, and at one point even divided the children into two groups and told them to fight each other and observed. The manuscript was rejected by many publishers, and even the book's publisher Faber and Faber initially rejected it as well. A lovely association copy from a then-unknown British school teacher on the cusp of becoming a major novelist, inscribing a copy of his soon-to-be published book to his next-door neighbors. The novel would become a titan of twentieth-century literature and would be named as one of the Modern Library 100 Best Novels, ranked number 41 on the editor's list and 25 by readers. In 1983, Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his novels which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today.".
