Decorative front board is reasonably bright and has only minor rubbing. Last 25 or so pages has a reddish water stain in lower corner. Flyleaf has someones light pencil notes. Publisher name on spine apparently means 2nd state binding.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Nice first edition copy (first printing) of classic tale by author of classic SF novel, "The Purple Cloud". Front cover nice and bright, spine faded, binding is tight. Overall in very good condition.

The book is in fair condition. The red cloth cover shows wear along the edges and spine, typical of its age. There's a significant tear on one of the interior pages, but it remains intact. The binding is somewhat loose, but the pages are generally clean and legible. No dust jacket is present.

Interior lightly discolored to end papers, foxed in places, age toned throughout, else clean.

Half title, title printed in red & black. Partially uncut in orig. red cloth, blocked in green & gilt, lettered in gilt; extremities sl. rubbed, spine a little worn at head & tail. Ink presentation inscription on leading pastedown: ''Miss C. Phillips from Henrietta B. Schneider. Dec 25, 1906'. Not in Glover & Greene. Hubin p.373. The second issue with the publisher's name at the base of the spine. The first British edition was published in 1908. A woman saves a man from drowning on the Norfolk coast but catches a serious illness in the process; meanwhile a neighbour is planning an arranged marriage for his niece to a musician. Matthew Phipps Shiel, 1865-1947, was a prolific novelist of Caribbean descent, known now for his early horror and science fiction works.

AN EXCELLENT CLEAN, TIGHT, AND BRIGHT COPY WHICH USUALLY TURNS UP QUITE WORN. FIRST EDITION.

Light bumping to spine ends otherwise a clean and handsome copy. The helpful addition of a Book Lover's Library label to the front board is however worthy of note and perhaps the heaving of a sigh. Frontis. with tissue guard. The book is internally clean, although the rear fly and pastedown have a number of small date stamps and a library stamp, inoffensive and out of the way, but definitely there. Rear inner hinge cosmetically cracked. Were this a normal UK first edition it's ex-library status would render it best avoided; this copy is however in a red and green binding not covered by Morse and that nobody seems to be advertising awareness of. Most probably a colonial binding seeing as the lending library was in Melbourne. A very good copy of a curiosity.

Some light scattered foxing to text block, a bright, about fine copy in about very good decorated dust jacket (gray paper stock printed in orange and dark green; design on front and spine panels matches that on the cloth binding) with some darkening to spine panel, shelf wear and a bit of minor chipping at corner tips, and chips from head and tail of spine panel, former with loss of "T" in "THE," latter just touching lower edges of a few letters of publisher's imprint. Overall, a reasonably nice example of a rare jacket. (#80460).
