O'Connell was born in Ireland, and moved to San Francisco in 1870. His grand-uncle was the famous patriot and statesman, Daniel O'Connell, known to history as the 'Irish Liberator.' Laid into the book is a newspaper clipping, about the author, from the Monterey Peninsula Herald (March, 1950). Author's first book. Poems include: "Drunk in the Street," "An Opium Dream," "Wine Pictures," "The Christmas Trees," etc.

The book is in Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have noticeable rubbing, bumping and fraying. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a former owner's address label on the top edge of the front pastedown page. This is the author's first "book. Daniel O'Connell (II) (1849 23 January 1899) was a poet, actor, writer and journalist in San Francisco, California, and a co-founder of the Bohemian Club. He was the grand-nephew of Daniel O'Connell (17751847) , the famed Irish orator and politician. O'Connell's strict classics-oriented education in Ireland stood him in good stead for his early career choices of teacher and journalist. In San Francisco, he formed friendships with artists and influential men who joined with him in presenting and promoting theatrical productions and in publishing books and newspapers. He wrote short stories for magazines and journals, and lived a life rich in food, drink, and the arts. A dedicated family man in America, O'Connell never lost his Irish poet's sense of overarching sadness joined with keen pleasure in the sensations of the physical world."
