Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, limited to 2,000 numbered copies (this being #1924). A presentation copy, fondly inscribed by the author on the title page to Trish [Montemuro] and dated 1983. Slim 8vo. 21pp. Quarter cloth. A very good copy of Pinter's celebration of Anew McMaster, the noted British Shakespearean actor-manager. No dust wrapper called for but supplied here with a fresh sheet of protective acetate. Pinter's holograph signature is printed to the base of page 19, which often appears to cause confusion, but this copy certainly does bear his penmanship, inscribed as it is to Trish Montemuro, who was assistant stage manager of the Pinter-helmed National Theatre production of Giraudoux's 'The Trojan War Will Not Take Place' which ran at the Lyttelton Theatre for 43 performances between May-October 1983 (Pinter's hand written date "May 10 83" was the press night for the show). A very nice association copy. Inscribed by Author(s).

First editions, presentation copies, sent with an autograph letter signed from the playwright to the economist Peter Jay (1937-2024) and his then girlfriend Lizzie Spender. Jay and Pinter knew each other through the playwright's wife Antonia Fraser. Spender is the daughter of the poet Stephen Spender and later the wife of Barry Humphries. The letter thanks the two for a "smashing evening" and gifts them the two books. Both works are eulogies, one of the cricketer Arthur Wellard and the other of the Shakespearean actor Andrew McMaster. Jay was well known for his eulogies, which may explain why Pinter sent him these two works; they also shared a passion for cricket. Arthur Wellard is a rare work, with only four institutional copies held. Loosely inserted as issued is a picture of the Gaieties cricket team, with Pinter seated on the second left and Wellard seated on the right. Mac is the signed limited edition, number 870 of 2,000 copies. Jay's book labels are present in each work. 2 works, octavo. Wellard: original white wrappers, front cover lettered in black; Mac: original green quarter cloth, spine lettered in gilt, cream cloth side, green endpapers. A few marks to bindings, Arthur Wellard wrappers a little creased, else very good copies.
