The composer in 1962 revised Lady Macbeth, renaming it Katerina Izmailova (Russian: Katerina Izmajlova) and assigning his Opus 114. He replaced two of its intermezzos, adjusted act 1, scene 3, and made smaller changes elsewhere. Katerina Izmailova was first performed on 26 December 1962 in Moscow at the Stanislavski-Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre, and first given a studio recording in 1964. But since Shostakovich's death the original version has been more often performed. The original uncensored version was not performed again in Russia until 2000.[3] Despite the opera's difficult history of censorship, the work has entered the standard repertory, in 2017-18 being the fourth most-produced Russian opera, and 54th most produced opera overall worldwide. The piano score of the opera was first printed at the order of the Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre on a glass duplicating device in the first half of 1933 for the soloists and chorus to prepare for the premiere. The piano score came out in 1935 in a specially designed edition featuring a photo of the author and a dust jacket with pictures on the flyleaf and on the fly titles,2 as well as an equirhythmic English translation of the libretto by Ya. Sudakova. The originals used in the process of working on this volume are the 1935 edition of the piano score and the 2007 edition of the score (New Collected Works, Vols. 52a and 52b). This publication takes into account the texts from the published score: Textological Comments and Appendix II "Differences between the Music Text of the Score and the 1935 Piano Score".
