470 x 375 mm. (18 1/2 x 14 1/4")."). [16] leaves: title page, dedication leaf, 11 text leaves (Magna Carta), title page for Conventio, and two leaves of its text. Printed on recto only. Two separately printed parts in one volume. SPECTACULAR PUBLISHER'S PURPLE MOROCCO, LAVISHLY GILT, covers with elaborate all-over design in gilt and blind, incorporating large Gothic "rose windows" at each corner, and rectangular panels surrounding a central cross panel, all of these sémé with various tools in a Gothic motif, raised bands, spine compartments tooled like narrow Gothic windows, gilt tooling to the edges of the thick boards, wide inner dentelles elaborately framed in gilt and blind, the widest frame diapered with Gothic trellis-work, scarlet watered silk pastedowns and endleaves edged with gilt tooling, gilt edges, original wide bookmark of gilt thread and brocade (very small areas at corners and head and tail of joints worked on by very expert hands). PRINTED IN GOLD, WITH HAND-COLORED AND ILLUMINATED ILLUSTRATIONS, the title page hand-painted and treated to give an "antique parchment" effect (including darkened margins), and the text with frames resembling the entrance to a Gothic cathedral, with hand-colored knights bearing the arms of the barons who signed the Charter posed within the niches that would, at a church, contain saints. Front flyleaf with a tipped-on handwritten letter dated 18 October 1817 and signed by the Earl of Guildford presenting this workâ""the number of which is limited"â" to diplomat and author Philip James Green. âHalf a dozen negligible abrasions (perhaps from insect activity) to lower board, but the binding essentially unworn and brilliant with gilt. Title leaf curling somewhat (perhaps to mimic one of the characteristics of parchment?), isolated faint thumbing, but A VERY FINE SPECIMEN--very clean, fresh, and bright internally, the gold text glittering and the decorations richly colored. This is an intriguing presentation copy of what Lowndes proclaims "the most magnificent of all editions of Magna Carta." It is one of the copies printed on card, with additional hand-painted "antiquing" to the title page that gives the appearance of old vellum, and it was bound by Whittaker's workshop in the elaborate morocco that appeared on some of the deluxe copies printed on satin or vellum. It also contains the supplementary "Conventio," printed in 1817 and often not added to the vellum copies. Noted for his ingenious ability to produce near-indetectable facsimiles of leaves printed by William Caxton and other incunabular presses, the typographer, printer, binder, and bookseller John Whittaker amazed the bibliophilic community by developing a process for printing text in gold. The Magna Carta was his first such undertaking; in 1816, he issued copies printed on thick drawing paper, vellum, or satin, with hand-painted embellishments. Dibdin notes that Whittaker was offered a premium from the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in recognition of his innovation, but refused it as it was conditional on his "making the process known" to the public. This was a wise move in Dibdin's eyes, as Whittaker understood "the importance of keeping it secret." The hand-colored illustrations for the work were done by watercolor painter John Harris Sr. (1767-1832) and his son, John Jr. (1791-1873); the latter in 1820 went to work for the British Museum, where he specialized in producing remarkable facsimiles of missing leaves from antiquarian books--a skill he likely acquired while in Whittaker's employ. According to Dibdin and Lowndes, the coats of arms were designed under the supervision of herald Thomas Willement (1786-1871). This copy was presented to diplomat Philip James Greene, author of "Sketches of War in Greece" (1827), by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford (1766-1827), a colonial administrator who had served as the first British governor of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). A noted bibliophile with an impressive library, Guilford himself had an ultra-deluxe copy of this work on vellum with an added portrait of King John, in a blue morocco binding and case (lot 920 in his sale by Mr. Evans, 12-17 January 1829). No doubt Whittaker was happy to create a special copy for such an important client to present to a friend. Although the present copy can clearly be seen as less desirable than those printed on vellum, its very striking binding and the fuller text including the Conventio material provide significant compensatory features.

First Edition
CARE, Henry. English Liberties: Or, the Freeborn Subject's Inheritance, Containing I. Magna Charta. First edition of one of the very first law books printed in colonial America. Contains the first American printing of the Magna Carta and other fundamental documents of individual liberty in Anglo-American law, including "seminal documents on the separation of church and state, the right to religious liberty, trial by jury and other founding principles." London: Printed by G. Larkin, for Benjamin Harris, [1682]. Full contemporary sheep boards, 228 pages. Measures approximately: 5.5" x 3.25". With woodcut-engraved headpiece and initial. This first edition features a printing of the Magna Carta, "a symbol of political liberty and the foundation of constitutional government" (Grams). English Liberties aimed to provide uneducated laypeople with information about the law and their rights, praising England's 'fundamental laws [as] coeval with government' and describing the Magna Carta as 'Declamatory of the principal grounds of the Fundamental Laws and Liberties of England.' Thomas Jefferson's found the work so important that he held two copies of this title in his library. Schwoerer writes that English Liberties influence is "in the writings of the founding fathers of the United StatesSamuel Adams, John Adams, John Dickinson and Alexander Hamilton" This 1682 edition precedes the first American edition, which came out in 1721. Though undated on the title page, "internal and other evidence shows incontrovertibly that the date is 1682" (Schwoerer, 288n, 194). The British Library notes that upon initial publication this work was condemned as 'seditious by the authorities but it was repeatedly reproduced into the 18th century, being regarded as a handbook of civil liberties.' Extremely rare in the first edition, especially anonymously published by Care. This is a very scarce book, but even more so complete with all the advertisement as originally issued. This copy is in its original state. Leather unglued from spine and front cover of the wood board, which has partially perished. Inside text block complete. Some tiny worming mostly affecting four lines of text from p.30 to p.50; all text still easily readable. Initial blank leaf damaged. Pages are slightly toned and otherwise clean. In good condition only but complete and very rare.

(MAGNA CARTA). The Magna Carta, signed in 1215, was an agreement between King John and rebel lords who were angry with the kings unchecked powers. The legal document agreed that the King was not above the law, Royal officials had legal limits and established the freedom of the church.Silver facsimile. 1977. London. A silver facsimile of the Magna Carta and the double-sided seal of King John. This artifact was produced in 1977 by Louis Osman, a famous English silversmith and goldsmith. The text is raised and it is mounted onto an orange leather backing. It is further contained in two custom boxes, along with a space for the King John seal. There were supposed to be 500 replicas made, and this is number 118, as marked in the lower right corner. The British government loaned one of the four known Magna Cartas to the United States in 1976 in honor of its Bicentennial. Osman made the custom case that held the Magna Carta while in America. The next year, Osman created this silver facsimile. Osman also made a separate Magna Carta facsimile that is permanently located in the United States Capitol crypt. The silver facsimile is based on one of the two Magna Cartas held in the British Library, known as the Cotton MS Augustus II.106. The artifact has some silver tarnish on it (although the overwhelming majority has been removed) and the custom box has a few nicks and faults. An unusual memento of one of the great legal documents of the West.

A comprehensive genealogy of the Cox Family dating all the way back to the early 1600s with some branches of the family reaching back even further. The Cox family has a rich history where they were both apart of or witness to some of the major events in American and English History. From witnessing the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215, to being one of the first settlers of New Amsterdam (modern day New York City) and Hartford, CT. The genealogy narrative indicates family participation in the Boston Tea Party and Bacon's Rebellion in 1679. The book itself was designed by the Rev. Frederic W Bailey, and it is his sixth edition of the Photo-Ancestral Record Book. Recorded in the book are the names, location of birth, and birth and death dates for each branch of the family tree. Where the complier of this genealogy knew; added in are burial locations, when individuals immigrated to America, including the ship they traveled on, as well as notations on where she discovered this information. Photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings, family letters, and other ephemera adorn the pages throughout this treasure. As one continues to read through this genealogy it almost seems as though there wasn't one important event or figure in American history that was not connected to this family.Family Connections and Family Lore of Note: The Temple branch of the Cox Family Tree is said to be descent from the famous Lady Godiva and the Earls of Mercia. George Yeardley, whose ancestor witnessed the signing of the Magna Carter, was one of the first settlers in Jamestown, and three time colonial Governor of the British Colony of Virginia. His wife, Temperance Flowerdew, was one of the witness to the Last Will and Last Testament of John Rolfe's, husband to Pocahontas. Hamutal Hammond Welsh (1735 1815) "conceived a great dislike for her husband", apparently tried to kill him several times, even burning down their barn at one point. Captain John Clapp, who later became the Clerk of the First Provincial Assembly in New York, is said to have barely escaped being eaten by an alligator in South Carolina. William King and his wife Dorothy came to America and settled in Salem. After converting to Quakerism, suffered persecution at the hands of the local government in the 1660s. The family ghost story of "Aunt Swan", Elizabeth Donnell, wife of General John Swan, who dreamt that Death himself was coming for her, and a week later mysteriously died suddenly. It is said her ghost still haunts the house she died in, and she has become known as the "Lady in White". Elias Nexen (1740 1831) was appointed first Collector of the Port of New York under the Continental Congress. Jacob Bump served with General James Wolfe during the French and Indian War and participated in the taking of Quebec in 1759. John Donnell owned the "Willow Brook" house for a time in Baltimore, Maryland, which housed the famed 'oval room'. This house was one of the first times, besides the White House, that an oval room was used in America. Gustav Lurman, who served in the 1st Maryland Cavalry, CSA, during the Civil War was saved by "Aunt Charlotte", an African American woman who hid him when he crossed the northern lines while on duty. Enos Bronson, or "Uncle Enos" was an editor for the Federalist Gazette of the United States, and supposedly took over Benjamin Franklin's printing press.
