However, the c…ommercial failure of his next two novels, together with a rejected biography of Lord Rochester, led to a personal crisis and, famously, experimentation with Russian roulette. Octavo. Original black cloth lettered in gilt to spine. Slight lean, small split in cloth at lower tip of upper board, covers lightly rubbed with a few tiny marks, edges dust-soiled, rear gutter a little fragile with a 2cm tear to endpaper. Dust jacket unclipped, faint vertical crease running length of front flap, a few nicks to top and bottom edges, slight toning to spine panel, but a lovely example overall.
