"This book, devoted to the work of Alfred Manessier, is long overdue. The artist's achievements over the past thirty years have influenced both the style and philosophy of other painters in many countries. In Manessier's art is embodied what has been called abstraction lyrique, and although the author considers this term perhaps inadequate, it does indicate the link between the abstract tradition and the elements derived from nature-from the organic and evolutionary as opposed to the scientific and mechanistic. Dr Hodin, who has had the full cooperation of the artist in the preparation of this book, describes the development of Manessier's work in its formal, thematic and technical aspects; he discusses the formation of Manessier's natural imagery and above all he examines the way in which religious concepts have influenced the artist's style. According to the art critic Werner Schmalenbach, Manessier is 'after Georges Rouault the only great painter of Christian Art in our age', while Marcel Brion has said of him that he is 'without doubt the greatest religious painter within abstractionism'.".
