Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Fine. On "Library of Congress" letterhead, which Basler served as long-time director of the reference department, Basler chats about a collection of E.D.E.S. Southworth documents the Library just acquired with the help of Gates. Signed in full in black ballpoint. Basler (1906-89) was a historian and editor of the 1953 9-volume "Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln.".

Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93), at that time a U.S. Army sergeant stationed in San Francisco. Near fine. On "Wellesley College Library" letterhead, McCrum writes, "It is a pleasure to send you the only photograph we have of the bust of Elizabeth Barrett Browning by Story. Such a request from a member of the armed forces is of genuine interest to us here at Wellesley." Bold full signature.

Approximately the last half of the book shows a small, faint moisture stain in the gutter at the tail of the spine. Otherwise some mild rubbing and shelf wear. The first edition of this publication (no other printings indicated) offers suggestions and rules compiled by A.C. Wright, Manager of the University of Texas Press, to facilitate University printing and reduce costs by properly preparing copy before sending to the printer. Signed by A.C.
