Quain of Ardmore etc. (see further details below). for sale by Inanna Rare Books Ltd.

With numerous further letters, postcards loosely inserted. Original Hardcover. Binding in rough but still firm condition with stronger signs of external wear. Fantastic example of a Day-to-Day Order-Book of an irish Traditional Boat Builder, active in the war-years of 1939 and 1940. Captain R.E. Roberts Boat-building Business, being a direct relative of R.R.Roberts ("The Sirius"), is a great example of traditional succession in irish craftsmanship. The Day-book gives us insight into the wishes of clients, pricing, quotes and reason of orders and how on the one hand irish Traditional Boat-Building was revered abroad and also greatly supported and sought after by the local irish population. Roberts' Boat-Building-company also had contracts from overseas and the correspondence reflects the hard times and imminent outbreak of war, which plays a role in the worries of Robert's clients and must have had an enormous impact on his company. Client W.R.ffrench Mullen speaks in a letter from April 15th, 1939 of the fear of not being able to come and meet his boatbuilder: "I am (unless Europe boils up before in the next forty-eight hours) coming over on about a fortnights leave, leaving London Saturday next." In another letter from May 2nd, 1939, ffrench Mullen hopes "the boat is progressing well" and that the company of D.O'Brien Corkery & Co. can deliver it in their lorry to Kenmare. Roberts notes about this client in his day-book an important message to one of his builders: "My client says he knows nothing about sailing - would you suggest that the area of Sails be in the Small Side for Safety - the boat is for use on the Kenmare River". Roberts notes about another client, Mrs. Howell of Fountaintown, who ordered a 11ft boat for children on Sunday 4-9-38 for Easter 1939 - Quoted 22 per ft = £12 / Roberts notes about "Miss Hill from Monkstown (daughter of Lt.Hill Architect) ordered 7-1-39 Centre Board Boat, Spirit Sail (brown), oars, rudder, Name on transome "YOLDASH", varnished top sides painted underneath - agreed price £16 - To be ready for Easter Holidays - Took Boat away 7-4-39 - pleased". / More details on other orders below. Further interesting orders of Boats, correspondence and details in manuscript-drafts about his clients by Roberts include: 1. Correspondence from P.O'Keefe, Ardnagreine, Bantry, County Cork to Captain R.E. Roberts, "Simla", Passage West, County Cork - [P.O'Keefe was Managing Director of G.W.Biggs & Co. Ltd. - Corn Millers, Merchants and Manufacturers in Bantry, County Cork] The O'Keefe correspondence includes three letters (two MLS (Manuscript Letter signed) and one typed letter) between the 25th of January, 1939 and the 31st of March, 1939. Roberts notes his draft-answer on one of the letters regarding an inquiry by O'Keefe for Roberts' 8-foot Dinghy. The drafts in the Day-book are of particular interest because Roberts gets into detail in his answering letter from January 30th, 1939: "I note you are thinking of getting a punt specially built - to fit upside down on Cabin with moveable thurant to allow for Skylight - I appreciate your difficulty regarding obtaining height of boom until Mast is stepped - would it not be possible to get this from the mark of deck on Mast from the wedges or Canvas Collar to gooseneck. Since seeing you I have got three orders for centre board Sailing Boats - two for this harbour & one for Sneem ." 2. Postcard - Order from J.Kelleher, Ringabella, Carrigaline: "Have measured the boat mentioned to you about a week ago & find it is 10 ft. long. The same will do now I expect to get a good serviceable boat. Please let me know when ready. I would like to get it soon but if you can't procure the best of timber at once, I will wait until then - J.Kelleher" (c.1939). 3. Letter from M. O'Connor - Rossdohan, Tahilla, Killarney, County Kerry - Monday 10th, 1938: "Dear Sir, Pardon my delay in writing - I saw Mrs. Prettymans punt she is very nice, but is too fine for me. I want a strong built smooth sided seaworthy boat, best timber, galvanises fastening. If this do[sic] not convey sufficient knowledge you can suggest a boat you think would suit and state price roughly." The list goes on and on and includes interesting orders from other clients. The Day-Book includes notes on proposed repairs on Wolfe's Yacht "Marion" (purchased from W.Johnson in Kinsale) Sprache: english.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Oppikofer / 1894 - 1915 circa / (Texas) [Surveyor's manuscript notebooks: Trinity River Survey, below Dallas to Magnolia, locks & dams, sketch maps, cross sections, railroad bridges] (Safe 3, 107488) 12mo. Six volumes. Contemporary sheep bound surveyor's notebooks (one stamped inside front cover: Clarke & Courts, Blank Book Manufacturers, Galveston). Bindings rubbed, with scuffing to leather. The 1894-95 volume with broken hinges. Internally clean. Texas Surveyor's Manuscript Notebooks with Sketches Six volumes of field notebooks with surveyor's sketch maps, cross sections, bridges, for a Trinity River Survey some ten miles below Dallas. The survey was apparently related to ongoing efforts to improve Trinity River navigation in the 1890s, specifically to open up a harbor connection for transporting cotton. Trinity River Canalization Projects The Trinity River Navigation Company was established in 1891 to promote the cause of navigation on the Trinity. The company constructed a temporary dam thirteen miles south of Dallas at McCommas Bluff. The company's efforts helped achieve the River and Harbor Act of June 13, 1902 which appropriated $125,000 for the construction of locks and dams and for the removal of obstructions to navigation. WWII interrupted the work, The debate over a proposed channelization of the river continued until 1973, when a bond proposal that would turn the Trinity into a barge canal connecting Dallas with the Gulf of Mexico was defeated by voters in the counties along the river. Yet after 1921, not one dollar of federal funds was spent on any project solely designed to canalize the Trinity. Millions were spent on the river, but these projects were designed primarily for flood control with navigation of secondary importance. Even today, navigation of the Trinity is still discussed, but over 150 years after the first steamboat made the trip upstream to Dallas, the Trinity is very much the same river today as it was then - Mitchell. The notebooks almost certainly relate to the above efforts, either funded by a private company or contracted by the government. They include sketches and details of some of the fourteen bridges that crossed Trinity between Dallas and Magnolia, as well as the series of locks and dams. F. Oppikofer. Trinity River Survey. F. • Two vols. Oblong folio. 1st. 13.25 x 10.25 in.; 12.25 x 10 in. [80; 80 pp (unpaginated)], both with thick black paper stock, with 359 tipped-in photos, ranging in size from 1.75 x 2 in. up to 8 x 10 in, many of them clearly marked in pencil, and/or ink on versos, some with signatures in lower white margin a images, nearly all on glossy photo stock (a couple hand-coloured, many with minor creasing, some damage to corners, a couple with tears along the upper fore-edge), still nearly all of the images are still quite clear and distinct; 4 leaf typescript on onion paper, 24.5 x 36 in. blueprint folded for radio receiving station; 6 different course certifications for Peterson in handling oil field and natural gas pumping equipment. First album is contemporary ribbed cloth post-binder, tied at gutter margin with black silk cord (some bumping, wear, bumping to corners, fraying); second padded leather album, rounded corners gilt lettering front cover, slots in leaves for postcards (minor bumping head & foot of spine, edgewear); still VG- set. These remarkable photo albums furnish an indispensable visual record of the history of American aviation just after World War I at Kelly Field, TX, and Chanute Field, IL. Almond Orwald Peterson (1901-1977), son of Norwegian immigrants, was born in Twin Valley, MN, moved with his family later to Billings and Scranton, ND, enlisted in the Army after High School, trained as a radio operator, and airplane mechanic, worked as a mechanic after his service in North Dakota, and then Texas, and finally worked in the oil fields surrounding Denver City, TX. Kelly Field in Texas was one of the Army Air Service's primary fields for training and deploying pilots during World War I. After the massive demobilization at the end of the War, the Kelly Field and Chanute Field in Illinois served as essential training grounds for Army pilots to exhibit their skills, holding air races, balloon races, and training technicians. All technical schools were joined with the mechanics school at Chanute Field in 1922, and were re-designated the Air Corps Technical School by 1924. These excellent photographs not only include detailed shots of the barracks, the radio towers, the equipment rooms, servicemen, and more, but also encompass a vast array of the aircraft which flew in and out of these fields, along with many aerial shots. There are photos of German Fokker triplanes, French Spads, Curtiss DH-4s, many of the Barling Bomber, the Witteman-Lewis XNBL-1, an experimental long-range three-wing strategic bomber which proved massively unwieldy because it was too underpowered with its six engines, a colour-tinted image of the USS Los Angeles Zeppelin, and several other lighter-than-air balloons, and airships as well. In addition, there are many photographs of plane crashes showing the high attrition and danger of flying during the 1920s, often in World War I surplus aircraft, and even a few images of funerals and caskets for lost comrades.

Having moved from Salem to Belfast in 1807, Read quickly realized the need for a school, for the needs of the community and his children, launching his effort to build something from the ground up; instrumental in its establishment, Read served on the schools Board of Trustees until his death. Old fold lines to most, some other light storage wear and soiling, but a very good lot. (1) READ. Retained autograph copies of 1808 letters to Joseph Story (1779-1845; Salem judge and state legislator, U.S, Supreme Court justice, author of important American legal works) and Thomas Whittier, a state legislator for then Belfast region, seeking help on a petition for a charter and grant of land to establish "a contemplated Academy in Belfast," local citizens having already raised "upwards of $4000" for the project. The letter to Story: 4to, 2-pages, approximately 250 words, signed by Read; Story was named to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1812, serving until his death. The letter to Whittier, on an integral leaf: 4to 1-page, approximately 175 words, in Read's hand, but unsigned. (2) READ. Extracts from Secretary's Records [caption title]. 4-page manuscript, printing selections from records relating to the construction of the academy, 1808-1814. (3) READ. An Inventory of the Property belonging to the Trustees of Belfast Academy Jany. 1st 1809 [caption title to a manuscript "Waste-Book" recording the school's inventory and accounting for building the school and other operating expenses, 1808-1810]. Small 4to (25 cm). (17) pp. Plain drab wrappers. (4) (READ) Trustees meeting, fund raising, and accounting reports, land grants, requests to local officials and state legislators, promises to send children to the school, etc., relating to the building and operating of the Belfast Academy, 1808-1832. 22 manuscript documents, 31 pages total, approximately 2500 words. 4to and folio, almost all in the hand of Nathan Read, several signed by him. Accompanied by seven small receipts, 1808, 1810, 1826, and 1828 (4). For the file of 32 documents,

  • This volume is vellum-bound, the paper watermarked for C. HARRIS 1846, the stationer's label for FREDERICK WALLER, 49 Fleet Street, London, the front free end-paper with Gosse's name written as in plate 4 of FREEMAN & WERTHEIMER Bibliography, the front board with label 'INFUSORIA.4.', the rear board with 'Journal' in script. A pencil note in Richard Freeman's hand, signed by him, reads : 'Given to me on my sixtieth birthday. 1 April 1975.' *The major portion of the Infusoria comprises detailed descriptions of some 75 species of Rotifer, each entry dated, with reference to a figure, the location found [many from Hampstead Heath, Berger's Lily Pond, the fountains of Trafalgar Square, Kensington Palace]. Part 2 is primarily a list of approx. 31 species, most of which are ascribed GOSSE, some with the postscript 'n.sp.' [new species?]. SEE - FREEMAN and WERTHEIMER Bibliography, 1980, #169-172 (1886-1889) - 'The rotifers had early attracted Gosse's attention and he had published seventeen papers on them, the first in 1850. He had also accumulated a large amount of unpublished descriptions and drawings.' F & W also refer to Gosse's original manuscripts : 'One of Gosse's notebooks on rotifers which was used in his articles in the Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society and then in this book, is in the Zoological Library of the British Museum (Natural History); another, entitled 'Drawings of Rotifera; by Philip Henry Gosse, F.R.S. Sept. 1886' is in the University of Toronto (see Nos. 399-401). A large bound folio volume entitled 'The original drawings of the Rotifera (Clifton, 1886)' at the Royal Society (MS 132) contains mostly original drawings by Hudson, some copies by him of Gosse's drawings, and some original ones by Gosse himself.' The rarity of this volume speaks for itself ! The ALS from Fred Dystan - 'Dear Gosse I am glad you are better, which I suppose I may assume from your writing. I think it is great humbug that you won't let me name my own beast. I use the word in a Pickwickian sense but I see no impropriety in your working on a beast I had already named. However I must leave it with you, as I cannot undertake to publish it myself.'. There is, in addition, a second letter from this correspondent, 7 sides, dated Oct.7th.1856, dealing with details of the Rotiferae.

Condition: Good +. / (illustrator). On offer are a group of three [3] original, detailed manuscript diaries handwritten by the City Engineer of what was known as the Chicago of New England. The diaries were written in 1876, 1878 and 1880. In 1876, George Kimball was the City Engineer of the city of Somerville, MA. Just north of Boston, Somerville was the scene of significant events in the Revolutionary War. Now, it was going through a rapid industrialization that would see its population mushroom from 15,000 to 90,000. The meatpacking industry was so large that Somerville was dubbed 'The Chicago of New England'. Brick-making was the second largest industry. All of this growth put significant strains on the city's infrastructure and Kimball played a very important role in seeing projects advance. He works tirelessly and his diary reflects the many meetings he attended or participated in: At stable at 7. Condition: Good. On offer is a super, original group of two [2] 1961 diaries and journals of a noted aircraft carrier's Mediterranean shakedown cruise handwritten by Jim Dickinson, RDSN, [a radar man] aboard the storied USS Shangri - La. Commissioned in 1944, the Attack Carrier Shangri-La participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations in World War II, earning two battle stars. Like many of her sister ships, she was decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, but was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s, and redesignated as an attack carrier (CVA). She operated in both the Pacific and Atlantic/Mediterranean for several years, and late in her career was redesignated as an anti-submarine carrier (CVS). She earned three battle stars for service in the Vietnam War. Between 1961 and 1970, Shangri-La alternated between deployments to the Mediterranean and operations in the western Atlantic, out of Mayport. She sailed east for her first tour of duty with the 6th Fleet on 2 February 1961, and this is the handwritten account of her first, we believe, Mediterranean tour. The 6 by 3.5 inch diaries are each approximately 146 pages, the first book being full, second perhaps half are a real below deck 'swabbie' account, much on drunken nights, fights and police chases, a lot of shakedown blues, lousy chow, heads that don't work and the like, and a modicum of writing about actual duties by a personable US Navy Serviceman. Overall G. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Manuscript.

Eichberg helped found and was the first director of the Boston Conservatory and was then longtime superintendent of music in the Boston public schools. All very good. For the four pieces,

Mounted albumen photograph on contemporary card mount. Manuscript caption beneath the image. Large albumen photograph by George Barnard. Barnard had worked as a photographer documenting the Civil War from about 1861, initially working for Mathew Brady and Edward Anthony, and then, from December 1863, for the Topographical Branch of the Department of Engineers, Army of the Cumberland, based in Nashville. Under the direction of Captain of Engineers Orlando M. Poe, Barnard ran the army's photographic operations. Bernard continued to work for the Union army until June 1865, recording a number of well-known locations, and taking part in Sherman's campaign, behind the front lines, taking photographs in his capacity as an official army photographer. In 1866, Barnard would publish his monumental Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign. "[It] is a remarkable work of great symbolic, historic, and artistic power. It is a result of a complex interweaving of Barnard's personal vision, nineteenth-century pictorial conventions, and larger ideas about war and the American landscape. The album was the most ambitious project of Barnard's career, and has long been recognized as a landmark in the history of photography" (Davis p.170). Indeed, the work has been called the first great landscape photobook. The above image would appear as an illustration within Barnard's Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, though the present image was printed from the original glass plate negative prior to the publication of Barnard's book. This earlier printing displays a slightly greater plate area and without the images of clouds superimposed into the sky. Keith F. Davis. George N. Condition: Good+. On offer is a super, original manuscript relic of early 20th Century and World War I era United States Naval history of particular significance to those researchers and historians who delight in seeing the rise of a common sailor to the lofty heights of commander. The author enlisted as a seaman in 1901 and worked his way up to rank of Commander and Captain, without attending Naval Academy, a self made man, who, would also during his illustrious Navy career be discharged and reenlist the next day without ever getting off the ship! Students of naval history know that it is a rare ascension of any man who serves below decks to become the god-like presence of a ship's captain and such is the case of William Arthur Fulkerson, [there is no indication of ownership in the book proper it came directly from an archive of his papers] whose naval career begins thusly: "Enlisted March 20th, 1901, at Chicago, Illinois and was sent to the Training Station at Newport, Rhode Island; was transferred from Training Station to the Training Ship Essex, Aug 22nd, 1901. Transferred from the U. S. S. Essex on April 5th, 1902 at Norfolk, Virginia, and reported on board the U. S. S. Minneapolis at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 22nd, 1902. Transferred from the U. S. S. Minneapolis to the U. S. S. Columbia, July 19th, 1902, at New York." This 80+ page log book meticulously details every ship, every port, with arrival and departure time, every day they anchored; how long they remained in port; and the day and time of departure. He served on the U.S.S. Essex; U.S.S. Minneapolis; U.S.S. Dolphin; U.S.S. Columbia; U.S.S. Lancaster; U.S.S. Wabash; Ordered to temporary duty in 1913 in North Dakota; Ordered to Receiving Ship Norfolk, Virginia; U.S.S. Franklin; U.S.S. Richmond; U.S.S. Maine; U.S.S. Iowa; U.S.S. Indiana; U.S.S. Hannibal; and on Sept. 16th, 1916, he reported for duty at the Navy Yard in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. August 15, 1917 - Appointed Ensign U.S.N. February 1, 1918. Appointed Lieutenant Commander. August 15, 1918 Appointed Lieutenant. "November 9, 1918, detached duty Navy Yard at Portsmouth NH, and reported to Commander Naval Station, New London, Conn in connection with the Anti Submarine Squadron, Nov. 11, 1918. On November 16, 1919 Fulkerson was to Command/Captain the U.S.S. Eagle Boat #12. [This was changed to PE-1, or 2, 3, 4, in 1920.] While most of the writings are factual there are many narrative entries of auspicious events such as: While on the U.S.S. Dolphin, October 22, 1901, "Took Crown Prince of Siam to West Point and Return." "January 11, 1903. While in port at La Guaira, Venezuela, we got Minister Bowen and took him to the U.S." "In 1905, at Oyster Bay, Long Island we received Japanese Envoys." Etc. The 7 1/2 x 9 inches ledger style book is overall G+. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript.
