Softcover (booklet). Published in 1986. Newly transcribed and edited by Charles Lemon. This story was originally written in 1834 and typical of the imaginary world she created with her brother Branwell. Angria was an extension of Glass Town, while Emily and Anne invented their own private world of Gondal. They wrote in tiny script in handmade books which are difficult to read. Some extracts are included in this text. Includes black and white illustrations and the text is reproduced in legible text. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. MARTIN (Sir Theodore, 1816-1909). Autograph Manuscript Leaf Signed, quoting Heinrich Heine, dated June 1889. 1 p., 8vo, in ink on laid paper, the verso with old paper adhesions, crease and an old fold. Good. From Heinrich Heine's Poems and Ballads in Martin's hand, written out and signed is this quotation: "The rose, the lily, the sun, and the dove, I loved them all with a passion of love. That is past; now one only is dear to me, My pretty, my witty, pure, peerless she; She herself, source of all that is worthy love, Is rose, and lily, and sun, and dove." From Heine, by Theodore Martin. June 1889. Sir Theodore's acclaimed English translation of Heine's Buch der Lieder (1854) introduced the German poet's lyrical romanticism to Victorian readers and influenced later Anglophone verse renderings. This autograph transcription?made thirty-five years later?shows Martin's lasting affection for Heine's poetry. Sir Theodore Martin was a Scottish poet, translator and man of letters, best known for his translations of Heine, Horace, and Catullus, and for his monumental Life of the Prince Consort. He was also the husband of the celebrated Shakespearean actress and author of On Some of Shakespeare's Female Characters, Lady Helen (Faucit) Martin. It is rare to find a manuscript leaf like this from him. . Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 4to. 8 x 6 inches. 78 leaves (156 pages), 41 leaves in manuscript, final 37 leaves blank. The first leaf includes the index for the first part (library) which is partially covered by medical clippings dated 1861. Leaves toned and foxed. In the original newsprint covered boards, leather spine. Binding shaken with burn marks on covers. Top edge of rear board burnt and gnawed, with loss of board and top blank margins of final 6-8 leaves. Deaccessioned institutional copy with bookplate on front pastedown. Housed in a clamshell box with ties, gilt lettered spine. Good. According to the 'American Libraries before 1876' database at Princeton University Library, the earliest known library in Killingly was established in 1745, as the 'United English Library for the Propagation of Christian and Useful Knowledge'. This was followed by 4 other social libraries beginning in 1801. There is, however, no other information regarding these libraries and the first and last references to them are recorded in the same year, suggesting perhaps a very brief existence or accounts that did not survive. This ledger contains the minutes of a meeting, held at School House District No. 1. In October 1830, for the establishment of a library in the North Parish of Killingly. It includes the resolves, constitution, list of members, (officers) librarians, committees of selection and inspection, amendments to the constitution, list of books purchased, prices, book numbers, names of members who borrowed books and dates and an account of damages and fines (Dec. 9, 1830, to Sept. 5, 1837). A Feb. 28, 1839, entry records the dissolution of the library, naming Calvin Warren as the auctioneer tasked with selling the library for cash (96 cents per book). The money was then returned to the subscribers by H.W. Hough. Some of the subscribers and officers include, Leonard Ballou, Jabez Amsbury, George Weatherhead, Mowry Amsbury, Dr. Robert Grosvenor, Dr. William Grosvenor, Waldo Eddy, Calvin Warren, Silas Tucker, Delight Moffit, Chandler Spaulding, and others. Nearly all were connected to Providence, Rhode Island, either by birth or trade. Killingly, CT is 25 miles west of Providence and was settled by a number of families from that city who were involved in the wool/cotton trade, establishing woolen and cotton mills on the banks of Quinebaug River, Whetstone brook and the Five Mile River. One such mill was established by Comfort Tiffany, the father of Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co. Leonard Ballou's daughter, Lydia, married Charles Lewis Tiffany's partner, John B. Young, whose sister, Olivia, married Charles Lewis Tiffany. They were the parents of Louis Comfort Tiffany. This modest library contained 40 titles which included several sets, bringing the total book count to 86. The most expensive purchase by far was a 6-volume set, The works of Franklin which cost the subscribers $12, Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, MacKenzie's 5000 receipts, Wilkins' Astronomy, Life of Washington by Bancroft, Silliman's Travels in Europe, etc. The second part includes a large number of curative recipes including cough mixtures, gastric remedies, laxatives, for habitual constipation, absorbent mixtures for children, for those with worms, Emplastrum Camphoratum, tinctures, pills, ointments, balsam for chapped nipples, smallpox, several for gonorrhea, etc. Few have the names of the authors while others were prescriptions for named individuals "Prescription for Mrs. Leavin". A U.S. Army Hospital paper prescription receipt (Rx), dated 7/4/1865, for a wounded soldier by name of Hughes, signed by the physician is pasted in. It is not clear how this travelled to Exeter, New Hampshire for Captain Nathaniel Gilman to sign, but it is possible that the prescriptions were the work of Dr. William Grosvenor (named above), who was a partner in the Grosvenor & Chace, a wholesale drug company in Providence, Rhode Island. Manuscript / Paper Collectible
No Binding. Condition: Good. Single parchment leaf (recto and verso), 245 x 182 mm, written in a fine, mature Caroline minuscule in dark brown ink, 29 lines per page, single column. Rubrics in red; simple pen-flourished initials in red and blue marking textual divisions. Pricklings and ruling faintly visible. The text comprises the Exorcism and Blessing of Water (Exorcismus aquae), with extended invocations against unclean spirits and prayers for purification, healing, and protection. These texts form part of the Roman ritual tradition as transmitted in Germanic regions during the 10th century and are characteristic of Rituals or Sacramentaries, rather than Missals or biblical codices. The hand is confident and regular, with well-proportioned Caroline letterforms and consistent word separation. Decoration is restrained and functional, reflecting a working liturgical manuscript produced for clerical rather than a luxury commission. Palaeographical and textual features point to production in the Alemannic sphere of the Upper Rhine, an area renowned for conservative preservation of Carolingian liturgical practice. In good bur well-used medieval condition. The parchment is supple but heavily toned at margins, with cockling and surface wear consistent with prolonged liturgical handling. There are tears at binding edge, with evidence of modern tape repair. Occasional later marginal notations present. Ink and decoration remain clear and legible. Early litugical manuscripts of this early date are increasingly scarce on the market. Leaves containing exorcistic and ritual texts are especially sought after for their historical and theological interest, offering insights into early medieval concepts of sanctification, healing, and spiritual protection. Ships unmatted and unframed.

Illuminated manuscript on vellum, approx. 160 x 120 mm, written in two columns of 50 lines in a fine, compact Gothic textura characteristic of Paris university production. Contains the beginning of the Psalter, opening with Psalm 1: " Beatus vir qui non abiit in consilio impiorum." and continuing through the early verses of Psalms. Decorated with a large blue intitial "B" introducing Psalm 1, richly heightened with red and blue pen-flourishing extending into the margins. Additional red and blue paragraph marks throughout. Light ruling visible. Condition is very well preserved. Vellum clean and smooth; ink strong and unfaded; initials bright. Minor handling wear at edges; tiny tears at former binding edge, slight waviness as typical. Overall, a very good plus for a manuscript of this date. Manuscript / Paper Collectible
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Illuminated manuscript on vellum; 160 x 115 mm. Double column, 46 lines in minute Gothic Textualis. A fine leaf from a mid 13th-century Paris pocket Bible, written on thin, high-quality vellum in an exceptionally small and regular Gothic Textualis typical of the Paris university book trade. The text comprises part fo the Prologue to the Book of Isaiah (Incipit prologus in Ysaiam prophetam), a standard Paris recension prologue introducing the prophetic books. The layout is in two columns of 46 lines, ruled in very light plummet. The script is a highly compressed Parisian Gothic bookhand, with characteristic biting curves, diamond-shaped puncti, and minimal ascenders and descenders. The leaf is decorated with a handsome HISTORIATED intitial "I", the opening letter of the prologue, extending the full length of the column. The initial is painted in deep blue and ochre with white tracery, containing the half-length figure of a prophet, very likely Isaiah, holding a scroll. A full-height bar border extends into the lower and upper margins with foliate terminals in blue, red and gold. A delicate pen-flourished column divider in alternating blue and red runs between the text columns, a hallmark of Paris workshops active during the third quarter of the 13th-century. Several rubricated initials and guide letters in red and blue provide internal textural structure in accordance with Paris Bible standards. The leaf exemplifies the commerical production of small-format Bibles for students and mendicant friars, a format that spread from Paris throughout Europe after ca. 1225. Its combination of minute script, disciplined ruling, and elegant but economical decoration places it within the Paris book trade, comparable to work associated with Maitre du Psautier de Saint-Louis and other Paris ateliers. Vellum is lightly toned with expected handling wear; minor cockling at edges; outer margins slightly thumbed; mounting adhesive at the corners. Ink remains dark and legible, Pigments in the historicated intitial well-preserved. Overall, very good for a working leaf fro a 13th-century portable bible. Ships unmatted and unframed.
