Add to basketpaperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. Updated mid-1960s edition. Colour printed paper map 102x75cm. Very good, slightly irregularly folded with some spotting. The Arab League's Arab Information Center was registered in Washington DC in 1955, and issued an earlier edition of this map slightly differently titled "The Strategic Arab World" in about the same year before Sudan joined. This unspecified edition presents the Arab world from Morocco to Oman on a scale of c1/8M, distinguishing the Israeli occupied territory of Palestine. It is undated, but follows the Omani oil discoveries (1964, with a derrick symbol in the region of Fahud) and precedes the Six Day War and formation of South Yemen (1967). Details shown by symbols include major petroleum sources (with more discoveries shown in the Gulf and Oman), important historic sites, important Holy Places, railways, and boundaries. Non-oil economic potential is shown by a wide range of mineral deposits, agriculture, and fisheries. In addition to major settlements, the palm tree symbol for dates highlights the existence of several named oases.

Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. Possible 1st edition. Colour printed paper map 99x72cm. Good, quite neatly folded with small holes at intersections, lightly tanned, with a couple of lines drawn on, and a couple of patches of correction fluid applied to the white area of Iran bordering the Gulf, ms titled to the blank verso. Undated, but the Arab League's Arab Information Center was registered in Washington DC in 1955, and this possibly first edition predates Sudan's entry on 19 Jan 1956. It presents the Arab world from Morocco to Oman on a scale of c1/8M. It distinguishes League members, Arab populated non-members (including Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Sudan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and what would become South Yemen, Oman and the UAE), the southern borders of the Communist world, and the Israeli occupied territory of Palestine. Details shown by symbols include military bases, major petroleum sources, oil pipelines, important historic sites, important Holy Places, railways, and boundaries. Non-oil economic potential is shown by a wide range of mineral deposits, agriculture, and fisheries. In addition to major settlements, the palm tree symbol for dates highlights the existence of several named oases. (A mid-1960s edition seen retitled "The Arab World" does not distinguish membership and excludes the military bases, oil pipelines, and Communist world borders).

Both the book and map are ink stamped in Arabic to their fronts: "Gift from the Arab Higher Committee for Palestine". Scarce (OCLC 1227666001, 21145219, 741183128). This 3rd edition dated 1957 contains a new Introduction. Worldcat also records the earlier editions in 1954 and 1956. This contains material that first appeared in Al-Masry newspaper in response to questions posed by its Editor-in-Chief to the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin Al-Husseini. Al-Husseini had established the Arab Higher Committee after the Great Arab Revolt in 1936 as a political platform for Mandatory Palestinians. It included Arab clan leaders and political parties chaired by the Mufti, with committees at town and larger village level. When the British outlawed it in 1937, Al-Husseini escaped to Beirut while other members were arrested and exiled. It revived briefly in 1938 for talks with the British to resolve inter-communal issues, and although Al-Husseini was not allowed to attend, he influenced proceedings. He spent the war years in Europe collaborating with the Nazis, then moved to Egypt after WW2. In 1945 the Arab League reformed the AHC, dominated by Al-Husseini's family via the Palestine Arab Party, with Al-Husseini rejoining as Chair in 1947. In that year the AHC boycotted the UN Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) and rejected its recommendations, and rejected the Ad Hoc Committee for Palestine's recommendation and the UN General Assembly's subsequent vote for partition. The AHC became largely irrelevent as a political force after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. LOOSE MAP: "Map of the Arab World illustrating the Importance of Palestine's location among Arab Countries", issued by the AHC, Cairo 1377 AH, 1958 AD, 48x32cm, titled and captioned in Arabic. This shows Arab League states in green from Morocco to the Gulf, with Palestine in red. The partially cropped caption along the bottom reads: "The Jewish colonial conspiracy against Palestine and its transformation into a state extended the policy of separating the Arab countries in Asia from the Arab countries in Africa".

42 x 100 cm. Five-tone lithographic map with illustration by Harraz. Constant ratio linear horizontal scale 1:7,500,000. Road map also showing railways, populated places, boundaries, rivers, wadis, and possible flood areas. Includes inset map: Diagrammatic map of the Arab world. Folded. First edition of this large, decorative map, showing the highways that linked countries under Arabian influence in the early 1970s. It stretches as far north as Turkey, south to the Sudan, west to Mauritana and east beyond the Strait of Hormuz, capturing the whole of the Arabian Gulf including Kuwait, Bahrain, Muscat, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the People's Republic of Southern Yemen. The verso contains an index of main travel routes through these various countries. - The United Arab Republic, as it is here referred to, was formed through a political union of Egypt and Syria. It was instigated by the Egyptian Prime Minister Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970) and was seen as an expression of pan-Arab sentiment. Syria broke aways from the union in 1961 (and is here shown as an independent country), but Egypt continued to use the name until 1972. The People's Republic of Yemen, the only communist state to be established in the Arab world, was formed in late 1967, to last until 1990. - Some nicks and small tears, a single mark to the covers, a 1 cm tear on the left side of the map. In very good condition for a fragile map. Scarce: LibraryHub does not locate any holdings whilst Worldcat adds just eight institutional copies worldwide. - OCLC 5403988.

Add to basket'''' '''''' ''''' "Musawwar al-jihat al-ardiyya",zincography, made around 1970 in Aleppo by Ibrahim al-Ja'fari. Size: approx. 61.5 × 92.5 cm. This large, colour-printed world map is a characteristic example of Arab cartography of the late 1960s, in which the geographical consciousness of the Arab world is clearly articulated. It reflects a period in which geographical knowledge in the Arab world was consciously linked to its own scientific and cultural traditions, independent of a Western, Eurocentric frame of reference. The title "Musawwar al-jihat al-ardiyya" [literally: Illustrated terrestrial directions] deliberately recalls classical Arabic geographical terminology. Rather than employing a modern designation such as "world map," a cosmographic formulation is used, presenting the earth as a coherent whole of directions, continents, and seas. At the same time, the map is cartographically modern: it is provided with a regular graticule, an explicit scale (1:43 million), and a key to cartographic symbols under the heading al-istilahat. Prominent are the large calligraphic inscriptions placed across oceans and continents. Names such as the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Arctic Ocean are rendered in generous Arabic calligraphy across the water surfaces, presenting the seas as structuring elements of the global image rather than as empty spaces. The map includes several inset maps. Two polar maps depict the North and South Poles in azimuthal projection. The North Pole map focuses on the Arctic Ocean and the surrounding landmasses; the South Pole map shows Antarctica with sectoral divisions corresponding to cartographic practice after the Antarctic Treaty (1959/1961), in which territorial claims were formally frozen but still visually represented. In a thematic map of the Arab core region at lower right, geographical, economic, and political elements are brought together to present the Arab world as a cultural and strategic unity. The emphasis on oil and indistinct state boundaries reflects the pan-Arab thinking of the late 1960s. The strip of national flags at the bottom of the map does not constitute a complete list of the world's countries; Arab and Islamic states are overrepresented. The presence of states such as South Yemen and the absence of later political entities, including the United Arab Emirates (founded in 1971), support a dating around 19691971. Price: Euro 975,-.
