OF ORDNANCE AT THE BALTIMORE ARSENAL. Philadelphia: Printed by G. Palmer; November, 1813. First edition. Octavo in 8s and 4s (8 7/16" x 5 1/16", 213mm x 130mm). [Full collation available.] With 3 engraved plates and 5 hand-colored folding engraved maps. Bound in contemporary half red roan over marbled boards and cloth ties. Gilt fillets to the corner-pieces. Moderately tanned and offset throughout, with some spotting. Presentation inscription on the verso of ?1: "G. Armistead Lt Coln/ presented by/ his friend/ Jos H Rees/ Capt. U. S. Ordnance/ 1814" John Melish (1771-1822) was born in Scotland and emigrated to America, settling in Philadelphia in 1811. There he established himself as a cartographer-printer-publisher in the mold of the Dutch masters, and became the great mapmaker of the expanding United States. Crucial to his success was the pocket military atlas (compare the 1776 "Holster Atlas" of Sayer and Bennet) that combined not only large folding maps but considerable descriptions of the places depicted, their strategic roles ("The Seat of War in North America") as well as the military personnel crucial to the ongoing War of 1812. Indeed, so emblematic of the period was his "Seat of War" that a friend's suggestion that he make a corresponding maps of the "Seat of Peace" led to the first domestically-made coast-to-coast wall map of America in 1816. The present copy was presented to Lt. Col. George Armistead (1780-1818), whose brevet was the command of Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore 12-15 September 1814. Crucial to the War of 1812, Fort McHenry's withstanding the bombardment of the Royal Navy inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Defence of Fort M'Henry, whose words were set to music as The Star-Spangled Banner, the United States National Anthem. Col. Armistead was responsible for the creation of the "flag so large that the British would have no difficulty seeing it from a distance" about which Scott Key wrote, and which now has pride of place in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Capt. Joseph Rees is known through correspondence (with George Bomford, who would go on to be Chief of Ordnance) relating to ordnance the provision of armaments which had been set up as a department in May of 1812. He was stationed at the Baltimore Arsenal, in which capacity he will have come to call Col. Armistead "his friend." The hand-writing is not Rees's but Armistead's, distinguished by the "Gr." abbreviating his given name. Armistead material is extremely uncommon (indeed, the auction record of an autograph letter calls it "among the rarest of all early American patriot's signatures"), to say nothing of the relevance of our volume to his famed command. From the collection of Charles J. Tanenbaum (2009), whose Pine Tree Foundation supports pre-school and after-school literary programs K-12, as well as fellowships for conservation and bibliography (their sale, Sotheby's New York, 16 July 2021, lot 44). Condition: Very good condition. A post-Civil War children's map puzzle illustrating the United States following the Civil War. Yellowstone National Park is shown in the upper corner of Wyoming, which was signed into law by Ulysses S. Grant in 1872. The Dakotas appear as one territory (they were split into North & South in 1889) and Indian Territory covers all of Oklahoma, interestingly, with no Fort Sill shown (established 1869), although Forts Gibson and Washita are indicated. Tucson is shown as the capital of Arizona, a title it held from 1867 to 1877. Most likely OCLC: 692321573 as it conforms to OCLC description, "Relief shown by hachures./ Shows states, major routes of travel, major cities and towns, military installations, 'Dakota' as one state, and Oklahoma as Indian Territory. Includes population and area statistics for the United States." A jigsaw puzzle map, colored lithograph pasted to wood, with a full color advertisement on the verso for 'White Sewing Machine', Cleveland Ohio. This is a beautifully lithographed advertisement, showing a courting couple on the left half and a scene of the married couple moving in to their home, he carrying the sewing machine, she carrying a cradle, on the right. In the original wood and paper covered hinged box, with bright green sides and red and green illustration at box lid of two small children and two large globes. Map itself slightly dusty at edges, couple small stains at Pacific Ocean. Small section of piece in Atlantic Ocean detached but present. Map measures 17 x 12", complete. With the original box entitled "The Silent Teacher".

Very good condition. Original folds as issued. Else excellent with no mends or stains. Size 11.25 x 18.5 Inches. This is a charming 1939 pictorial map of the United States, produced as a pamphlet by the Greyhound Bus Company to promote their line as a comfortable and affordable means of travel - with a special focus on the upcoming New York World's Fair. What 'Good Natured' Means in the 1930s Like many of the most desirable pictorial maps, this one is filled with little cartoon vignettes humorously referencing to the regions depicted: Death Valley features a skeleton fanning itself and declaring 'Boy! Sure is hot!' A camel is shown near Alamagordo, New Mexico, saying 'Just like home!' In Reno, Nevada, we see a man, a woman, and a judge; the woman jauntily calling, 'So long, old dear, I'll be suing you.' (Reno, with a lenient residency requirement and accommodating courts, was famous as the divorce capital in the thirties and forties.) These jests are harmless enough, though the depictions of Native Americans, African Americans, and Mexicans on the map frequently cross the line from 'Good Natured Humor' to 'Commentary on 20th Century American Racial Attitudes' and even approaching 'Wow! That's Racist.' An Updated Edition The map's imagery is largely unchanged from the earlier editions, but it adds a stylized depiction of the architectural symbols of the 1939 World's Fair, the Trylon and the Perisphere, replacing a depiction of the Statue of Liberty. KD? KO? Kappa Delta? The author of this map is not known, in spite of it having been signed. In a banner in the lower right are the stylized initials KD (or KO, or the Greek letters Kappa Delta) but we have found no note in the admittedly sparse literature to indicate what these initials might stand for. OCLC shows a similar lack of success on the part of library cataloguers, who list 'Greyhound' and the 'Reserve Lithographing and Printing Company,' and call it a day. Publication History and Census This 1939 small-format version of the map was printed by Cleveland's Reserve Lithographing and Printing Company, one of that city's many mid-century printing establishments. OCLC shows no other product from Reserve, apart from editions of this map and its larger progenitor. OCLC lists two examples only of the 1934 first issue of the full-size map, and eight of the 1937 reissue. This 1939 edition, issued as a folding pamphlet, appears to have survived poorly: only two appear in OCLC, at the Biblio et Archives National de Quebec and the University of South Carolina. Very good. Light wear along original fold lines. Text on verso. Size 8.25 x 10.75 Inches. This is a 1952 Oren and Rosemary Arnold humorous pictorial map of the United States prepared for the booklet Arizona Brags . A classic 'brags' map, it presents its home state in the most complimentary terms while satirizing the perceived flaws of others. A Closer Look The map depicts the continental United States (relatively speaking) from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean and from Canada to Mexico from an Arizonan's perspective. Arizona, naturally, dominates and is referred to as 'heaven', 'paradise', and a land of 'free money' with 'steaks for everybody'. An angel underscores Arizona's heavenliness, while a female farm hand carries two pails labeled 'milk' and 'honey', escorted by two bees, reinforcing the 'milk and honey' image. The sun also rises and sets in Arizona, a subtle suggestion that the universe revolves around the state. The Grand Canyon and Lake Mead (the 'world's finest scenery'), of course, occupy the upper portion of the state. Arnold points himself out ('Me') relaxing in the state's southwest. A large bull, illustrated in the southeast portion of Arizona, points towards the east, past New Mexico (diminutively reduced to 'Santa Fe'), at a fellow bull in Oklahoma / Texas. The Arizona bull's cousin, however, is not as well-fed. The rest of the map consists of rather comical illustrations of other states. California, for example, is known for its earthquakes, tsunamis, rain, smog, and ice. The Northeastern U.S. is a 'cultural and political void' inside the Arctic Circle. Nearby Pennsylvania is full of smoke and slums, while Washington, D.C., is depicted as a politician doling out cash and coins. (This is likely a nod to Arizona's libertarian leanings; incidentally, Barry Goldwater was first elected as one of the state's senators the same year this map was published). Renderings of other states are no more flattering, with Florida ('Flawida') seen as a swampy, mosquito-infested wasteland and Nevada represented by a figure combining elements of an Old West desperado and a modern Las Vegas gangster. The verso contains additional amusing and promotional text for the state, starting with the crack 'God gave Arizona sand for a beach, but forgot the ocean'. Brags Maps Oren Arnold published several 'brag' books and maps in the mid-20th century, including for California, Colorado, and New Mexico in addition to Arizona Brags . These were small, ephemeral, souvenir-type books that highlighted the attractions and characteristics of the state in question in a humorous manner, often ridiculing other states and regions in the process. Other artists and authors produced similar works around the same time, such as John Randolph and Mark Storm's 'Official Texas Brags Map of North America' and Daniel Wallingford's maps of the United States as seen by Bostonians and New Yorkers (all previously sold by us). Publication History and Census This map was prepared by 'Rosie' (signed to the bottom-left of the cactus here), that is Rosemary Arnold, the daughter of Oren Arnold, who was the designer and illustrator for his 1952 booklet Arizona Brags: Your Sun-country Souvenir . This was the second edition of both the book and map, the latter of which was noticeably reworked, employing a different color scheme among other noticeable changes. (See the earlier edition, previously sold by us as ArizonansUS-arnold-1947.) Neither edition of the map is independently cataloged in the OCLC, while the 1952 edition of the booklet is held by about 20 institutions. References: OCLC 2711306 (entire booklet).
