First printing dated 12-63, this is one sheet in a series of six revised and issued during 1963-68 based on World 1/1M Series 1301. Near fine, neatly folded. Centred on Iran, coverage is bounded by Dogubeyazit (NW), the Caspian (NE), Isfahan (SE), and Kerbala (SW). Features include international and military boundaries, 5 road types (hard and loose surface, track and trail), rail, airports and airstrips, drainage, relief, explanatory notes, and a glossary. The insets are plans for Al Mawsil, Tehran, Tabriz, Baghdad, and Isfahan. The verso repeats the main map in b/w on a 1/1.5M scale, giving military focused phrases in English, Russian, Arabic, Azerbaijani Turkish, and Persian (requesting help, water, the location of soldiers etc) and hours of darkness. There are also extensive text descriptions of several distinctive and highly geographical areas from desert to cultivated areas.

The sixty-seventh edition of the "Rand McNally Commercial Atlas and Marketing Guide," published in 1936, is unique in its inclusion of informative details. Each map is brightly colored; predominantly in orange and tan with blue oceans, lakes and rivers. Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Baluchistan are illustrated on these maps. The names of regions, states, important towns, lakes, rivers and major geological features are labeled. This map measures 13 inches by 19 inches.

A set of two maps and a travel guide with the bookplates of Luigi Gabbrielli, formerly Fascist Italy's Consul General to Palestine, dating to when he was its Minister in Iraq. Supported by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Amin al Husseini, Gabbrielli led the anti-British propaganda effort that resulted in the Golden Square Coup that brought the nationalist Rashid Al Gaylani to power briefly in April 1941. The three of them fled to Iran when the British ousted Gaylani in the Anglo-Iraqi War (2-31 May). With them went Fritz Grobba, Nazi Germany's former Minister to Iraq and Saudi Arabia who had facilitated the provision of German miliary advisors to Baghdad, and the training of anti-British Iraqi officers in Germany. Major pipelines are shown including Kirkuk to Haifa and Tripoli with its pumping stations (this began operation in 1935), and APOC Pipeline terminating at Abadan. Railways including the Hejaz and Baghdad lines are marked with stations. Wells, waterholes, jebels and wadis are individually named and desert routes shown. Dated 1944, after the end of the Mandate in Lebanon, and declaration of independence in Syria, neither of which are marked as French Mandates. Palestine and Trans-Jordan are still marked as British Mandates. Features include oil pipelines, caravan routes, road, rail, shipping routes, ancient sites etc.

Map yellowing, near fine except for short tears along folds. Wraps very good, worn to edges. Scale 55 miles to 1 inch or 1:3,500,000. Undated, but this edition appears to be early in the Mandate with demilitarised zones shown on Turkey's borders with Iraq, Greece and Bulgaria, the names Mesopotamia and Iraq are both used, and Ottoman Vilayets are shown. Palestine and Trans Jordan are identified as British Mandates, Iraq / Mesopotamia as a sovereign state under British Mandate, and Syria as French, with Alawiya, Jebel Druse, and Great Lebanon marked as separate entities. Saudi Arabia hs not come into being, with just the Hejaz labelled.

Eight handsome maps of Iraq published in a volume alongside information on the region gathered by the British after WWI, including climate, geography, the tribes of Iraq, and ancient sites, as well as information on passports, consulates, coinage, the police and army, the "Development of Oil Resources," and "Government Regulations for Ladies Travelling in 'Iraq" aimed at the influx of European visitors and business interests in the interwar period. The maps show Iraqi highways for the prospective motorist, the cities of Baghdad and Basra, ancient sites, and trans-desert routes. Here published in a revised and enlarged edition. - Previously owned by the famous American archaeologist Richard Francis Strong Starr (1900-94), as indicated by an ownership inscription reading "R. F. S. Starr" on the front free endpaper. Starr was a member of the initial Harvard-Baghdad School dig at Nuzi (also known as Yorghan Tepe), near Kirkuk in Iraq, and was director of operations there from 1929 to 1931. Among other findings, this expedition uncovered thousands of cuneiform tablets associated with the Horites, an ancient people mentioned in Biblical texts but previously unknown to archeology. The site at Nuzi appears on the map of ancient sites in this volume. - The Kingdom of Iraq under British Administration, or Mandatory Iraq, existed between 1921 and 1932, after Iraqi nationalist pressure pushed back against the proposed British Mandate of Mesopotamia. During the postwar phase in which Britain had large colonial Mandates in the Middle East, tourism became increasingly popular, and such publications came into demand. - This is a particularly good copy with all of its maps intact and in good condition, with only slight signs of wear.

Revised and enlarged edition: an excellent guide to the roads of Iraq, with notes compiled by government departments and members of commercial firms. The text contains chapters on the "Development of Oil Resources", "The Great Tribes of Iraq", and "The Iraq Police", and offers advice on roads and railways, the Iraq Automobile Association, "Government Regulations for Ladies Travelling in Iraq", and other information on history, culture and political organization of the country. Three maps printed in colour on one large sheet of paper: one large overview map of the Middle East (also showing parts of the Soviet Union, North Africa, and Turkey) on one side, and the "title page" with two smaller maps - one of Iraq and one of the countries around the Gulf - on the other side. Folded. Colourful declassified CIA map of the Middle East, probably depicting the situation between January 1972, when the United Arab Emirates were founded, and 21 August 1974, when the Treaty of Jeddah was signed. On the present map the UAE still shares a border with Qatar, which was no longer the case after the treaty, as it had to cede territory to Saudi Arabia. The map was likely drawn and used by the CIA because of the tensions in the region, but declassified a decade later. It is not dated, but must have been published after 1986, as the publisher changed its name from Franklin Survey Company to Franklin Maps, and moved its offices from Philadelphia to King of Prussia, PA, in 1986. - The map is folded, with small holes in some of the areas where two folds meet. Otherwise in good condition. - With a contemporary ownership annotation "Betty Vomer (?) Meurade (?)". - For the publisher cf. A significant document recording the cartographical intervention of the British government in the affairs and perceptions of its then-colony. The relationship never stabilized (as much as any imperial claim can be said to do so), and in 1932 Iraq would become independent. But here in 1929, the governments of Britain and Iraq attempt to frame the Middle Eastern nation as an appealing historical landmark and even a casual tourist destination. Among the fold-outs are several road maps, a city  map of Baghdad, and a map of all the ancient sites presumably of interest (e.g. Babylon, Ur, and Seleucia). The controlling exertions of the colonial power are most overt at the fifth map for "Trans-Desert Routes," where an outline of England is provided "for scale." Though the foreword declares the contrary - the notes "should not be regarded as necessarily containing the views of the Ministries of the Government - the tables of northern and southern "tours" and a nod to consumer air travel proves the opposite. Bound in red cloth over boards with gilt titling at upper cover. Modest edge rubs and bumps, some creasing to sixth map, which overlaps fore-edge, else near fine. Unrecorded in OCLC.
