Flexible Boards. Condition: Good. Square and tight in lightly soiled and flecked red and black covers. Extremities worn and rubbed, spine more so with heavy creases and chips. Corners gently bumped. First forty pages have faint green stain on edges of bottom corners. Page edges age-darkened and mildly foxed. No interior markings. Maps of the District and plans of Broadstairs Margate, Ramsgate, Sandwich, Herne Bay and Canterbury all present and intact. Illustrated throughout with b&w photographs. Undated, the one copy located in institutional holdings is the copy in The British Library, who give a date of circa 1851 on this Victorian Guide Book to the Isle of Thanet, and Surrounding Districts, bound in the original cloth which has been rebacked, retaining a portion of the original spine cloth, 245 pages with around 100 illustrations, a small format measuring 5.75 inches by 4 inches approx., internally lacks blank front endpaper, noticeable foxing and browning to opening and closing few pages, with occasional foxing marks within, heavy browning to inner edges of two pages (pictured) from the pressing of old dried flowers, there is a noticeable horizontal tear to one of the pages (pictured) with no loss, else an acceptable example of this scarce publication.

Elaborate signature of Mrs Arnold of Paradise Row, Lambeth, 1795 on front pastedown, repeated in smaller abbreviated format at foot of p.vii, Brighthelmstone; later pencil signature of William Whenday, Eltham, Kent, 1874 on first free endpaper, repeated on recto of Margate frontispiece. Illustrated by engraved title, frontispiece, folding map and by tables in text. Three eighteenth century guides bound as one. The Brighton Guide was first published 1788 and all editions have the Advertisement at the beginning signed, 'M.' The Margate Guide was first published in 1763 and under this title in 1770. It is subtitled A Short Account of the Isle of Thanet, closer to its original title, and is noteworthy for its description, explanation (at end), and frontispiece plate of the bathing machine, showing the version with the hood which was developed in Margate around 1750. The Peterborough Cathedral guide is an abridgement of the History of the Church of Peterburgh, 1686, by Simon Gunton (1609-1676) and was first published under the title A Concise History.in 1782. At the end it includes A true Narrative of the Rifling and Defacing, the Cathedral Church of Peterborough, in the year 1643.
