Marie Jahoda-Lazarsfeld (1907-2001) war schon als junge Frau in der sozialdemokratischen Jugend organisiert, studierte dann Psychologie an der Uni und Lehramt an der PH und promovierte mit 25 Jahren als jüngste Doktorin Österreichs. In dem Dorf Marienthal südöstlich von Wien untersuchte sie mit ihrem Mann Paul Lazarsfeld und weiteren Kollegen von der Wirtschaftspsychologischen Forschungsstelle, wie sich Arbeitslosigkeit auf die Menschen auswirkt. Die Textilfabrik dort wurde geschlossen, die Mehrheit der Bewohner war ohne Job. Die Wissenschaftler sprechen nicht nur mit ihnen, sie notieren auch, was sie essen, welche Bücher sie lesen, und messen die Geschwindigkeit, mit der sie über die Straße gehen. Diese Verbindung quantitativer und qualitativer Methoden ist ein Meilenstein für die empirische Sozialforschung: Die Auswertung von Statistiken wird um Beobachtungen und Einzelinterviews erweitert.
