First German edition, translated from the original English (London 1725) by F.C. Weber. John Windus participated in an expedition led by Commodore Charles Stewart in 1720 to secure a peace treaty with the emperor of Morocco, Ismail Igb Sharif. The following year a treaty between Britain and Morocco was signed at Tétouan. At that time many Europeans were imprisoned in Morocco because of piracy, but thanks to the peace agreement many English prisoners were released. This edition has a portrait of the Emperor Moulai Ismail which is not present in the original. A beautiful copy. Gay 1294. Paulitschke 692. Playfair 342.

Publisher's olive-green cloth, badge in gilt to upper board, within black-stamped ornamental frame, titled in gilt to spine; upper edge gilt. Boldly inscribed "Bertram Goff 71st Hightlanders from The Author June 1881" to front free end-paper. Hinges cracked, boards a little rubbed, corners bumped and rubbed, text-block shaken. Contents clean and bright. A very good copy. A scarce account of an expedition by a captain of the 93rd Highlanders that went from Tangier to Fez, then to Mekenes and Rabat, returning to Sla Mehedia, El-Araish, and Azila.
