Originally published in New Orleans in 1887. A second edition was published in Chicago in 1893. 192 pages, stapled. This copy is missing its covers, and the title page has a large piece missing from the lower part near the spine, affecting one word of the imprint. Title page is also worn around the edge, and has a tear across it; otherwise, a generally very good copy. Apparently the wrappers for this edition contained a portrait of the author - not present here. A rough copy of an uncommon book. See Janet LeCompte: "Pueblo, Hardscrabble, Greenhorn: Society on the High Plains, 1832-1856", for an interesting account of John Brown's mediumistic exploits.

An elusive title, in the marketplace, of this San Francisco imprint, which prints the expanded text, including "Early Spiritual Work in California" (adding twenty-five pages of text to the 1887 edition, which was published in Iowa). Western pioneer John Brown (1817-1899) was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. He headed west, as a young man, was shipwrecked off the coast of Galveston, fought with Sam Houston in the Battle of San Jacinto, was a trapper in the Rocky Mountains, helped to build Fort Pueblo, married the daughter of a Mexican mother and African-American father, and became a shopkeeper.
