In the preface, Arnold offers an account of the three great modern tragedies that have been written on his subject of Merope and discusses the structure of the Greek drama.This copy previously held by the Society of St John the Evangelist, an Anglican religious order for mem founded in 1866 at Cowley, Oxford, England. Known colloquially as theCowley Fathers, the society was the first stable religious community of men to be established in theAnglican Communionsince theEnglish Reformation. En même temps il préside à la rédaction du Journal des savans. Vers 1738 il échange plusieurs lettres avec Voltaire au sujet de la traduction et la publication des "élémens de la philosophie de Newton". - Edition originale impr. à la suite de l'édition princeps de "Mérope", comme partie des "Pièces de littérature" en 1743. Les "Pieces fugitives de litterature" avec "Lettre sur l'esprit" et "Considérations sur l'histoire" sont publiées ici pour la première fois. "Lettre a Mr. Norberg" est une réponse de Voltaire à la publication de l'édition française de "Histoire de Charles XII par Jöran Anders Nordberg.
