Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. Green woven fabric cover in Fine condition with some fading of spine. Brown slipcase slight fading. Glassine cover torn in two, but still protects front and back not spine. 7" x 10 3/4". Gently read. Very tight. With an introduction by David Daiches. Illustrated with paintings by Wray Manning and signed by the artist on the rear colophon page. Copy #128 of a limited fifteen hundred. From the introduction, "It is the novel to which George Eliot was most emotionally committed and in which her personal voice sounds most urgently. The story of Maggie Tulliver, intelligent, imaginative, idealistic, ambitious, and turbulent, derives directly from the story of young Mary Anne Evans (which was George Eliot's real name); and the continuous conflict between Maggie and her environment, the continuous frustration of her demands for fulfillment and for love, is presented with such a sense of almost yearning identification because it derives so much from autobiography." We, at Coalesce Bookstore, thank our customers and supporters, acknowledging that what we do would not be possible were it not for each of you. Books over 2.2 lbs require additional shipping cost outside US, approximately $40USD ($25USD for Canada). Signed by Illustrator(s).

Cloth. Condition: Good/very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. 1860. 1st ed. 3 vols. 1. viii(1)-361(1) plus z6 blank. 2. viii(1)-319(1). 3. viii(1)-313(1) plus 16pp publishers' ads. Uncut in original cinnamon ripple-grain decorative cloth. Gilt spines. Edmonds and Remnants ticket in vol 1. Gilt lettering on spines unevenly dulled and corners bumped. Spines relaid with matching reinforcement paper strip on inner hinges. Text age- toned, some edges a little friable. CARTER first state text, without ad lf in vol 1, 'B' binding (no priority assigned). INSCRIBED 'FROM THE AUTHOR' on the half title of vol 1. Of all the Victorian giants.she probably presented the fewest books. With 'Scenes of Clerical Life', George Eliot had requested that the 8 presentation copies be sent with the inscription 'from the author'.'I don't mean to send the Mill on the Floss to anyone, except to Dickens.if YOU present any, I would be glad if you would particularly enjoin 'from the publisher', to be written in them that they may not be imagined to have come from me'. (George Eliot to John Blackwood 22/3/1860.) BAKER and ROSS (A.5.1.a) locate 4 inscribed copies. 1. to Dickens 'from the author'. 2. to Dr. Deakin 'from the author'. 3. Wolff (2060) copy with named presentation inscription, presentation page reinserted and recased with new endpapers without z6. 4. 'from the author' sold Sothebys 27/6/1925 'recased and foxed' - the last inscribed Mill on the Floss to appear in auction. The 4 libraries with major holdings of George Eliot (Beinecke/Yale,Pierpont Morgan, British Library and National Library of Scotland) do not have inscribed copies of Mill on the Floss. As such, a VERY SCARCE manifestation of this title. 'A reimagining of Eliot's strained relationship with her much-loved brother, the Mill on the Floss represents Eliot's most autobiographical work'. Images available on request. Inscribed by Author(s).

Large paper edition of the works of George Eliot, with an autographed signed letter tipped in. Octavo, 25 volumes, bound in full morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine, elaborate tooling to the front and rear panels, raised gilt bands, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, elaborately illustrated with tissue-guarded engravings including frontispieces in color. In near fine condition. An exceptional set. From Adam Bede to The Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner, Eliot presented the cases of social outsiders and small-town persecution. Felix Holt, the Radical and The Legend of Jubal were overtly political, and political crisis is at the heart of Middlemarch, in which she presents the stories of a number of denizens of a small English town on the eve of the Reform Bill of 1832; the novel is notable for its deep psychological insight and sophisticated character portraits. The roots of her realist philosophy can be found in her review of John Ruskin's Modern Painters in Westminster Review in 1856. Readers in the Victorian era particularly praised her books for their depictions of rural society, for which she drew on her own early experiences, and she shared with Wordsworth the belief that there was much interest and importance in the mundane details of ordinary country lives. Eliot did not, however, confine herself to her bucolic roots. Romola, an historical novel set in late 15th century Florence and touching on the lives of several real persons such as the priest Girolamo Savonarola, displays her wider reading and interests. Middlemarch, has been described as the greatest novel in the English language by Martin Amis and by Julian Barnes. From the library of Lavinia Resor Law Robertson with her armorial bookplate to the pastedown of each volume and central gilt monogram.
