Hardcover. Condition: Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice older book in good condition. Some tanning wear and marking due to age. Pages excellent. Hardcover. English. Pub Year 1955, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> The Mint is a personal account detailing T. E. Lawrence's experiences in the Royal Air Force… (R.A.F.) Depot between August and December 1922, supplemented by later reflections. Written after his first enlistment under the name John Hulme Ross, Lawrence's narrative offers a profound exploration of his mental and physical condition post-war, as well as insights into military life. The book presents a highly subjective portrayal of Lawrence?s time in the R.A.F, capturing the trials and tribulations he and his fellow recruits faced. Although he expresses resentment towards the treatment meted out to recruits, the narrative avoids self-pity, instead utilising a robust and often entertaining style. Through sharp character sketches, Lawrence showcases his literary talent, providing vivid depictions of those he encountered. His acute ear for conversation allows him to faithfully render the language of barrack-room life, including dialogues that reflect the authenticity of military vernacular?so much so that some phrases were considered too raw for general publication.Despite Lawrence?s own description of The Mint as an iron, rectangular, abhorrent book that no one would willingly read, it stands as an insightful and engaging commentary on his experiences. The work invites readers to delve into the complexities of military life during a transformative period in Lawrence's life, offering a unique glimpse into the struggles and camaraderie inherent in the R.A.F. through his distinctive literary lens.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. LAWRENCE, T. E. The Mint. A Day-book of the R.A.F. Depot between August and December 1922 with Later Notes. London: Jonathan Cape, 1955. First edition, first impression of the first British trade edition, published posthumously with the introductory…note by A. W. Lawrence. Quarto. Original blue-grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt with RAF roundel device, upper board blocked in blind, top edge blue, title printed in red and black, original printed dust jacket priced at 17s. 6d. net. A very good copy in the original dust jacket. Cloth clean and square, binding firm, contents bright with light spotting to the endpapers and preliminary leaves. The dust jacket is toned and marked, with rubbing, small chips and wear to the spine ends, corners and folds, but remains substantially complete and highly presentable. Contemporary gift inscription to the front free endpaper: "Evelyn Warren from Edmund. 8.3.1955." This appears to be a private gift inscription dated shortly after publication. No further connection between Evelyn Warren, Edmund, and Lawrence has been established. The Mint is Lawrence's extraordinary account of life in the ranks of the Royal Air Force. After the fame of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Lawrence sought anonymity by enlisting under the name John Hume Ross. The book was published under his service identity, 352087 A/c Ross, a deliberate reduction of the celebrated "Lawrence of Arabia" into number, rank and discipline. The result is one of the most unusual military memoirs of the twentieth century. Where Seven Pillars of Wisdom is expansive, heroic and desert-lit, The Mint is compressed, abrasive and unsentimental. It records drill, fatigue, barrack-room speech, technical training, humiliation, obedience, comradeship and the making of an airman. Its importance lies partly in its subject - a rare literary view of the early RAF from the lower ranks - and partly in its psychological force. Lawrence writes not as commander or legend, but as a man submitting himself to the machinery of service life. The book also has an important place in the literature of identity. In The Mint, Lawrence dismantles his own myth. The famous writer and soldier becomes "Ross", then "A/c Ross", then almost simply a function within the RAF system. That tension between celebrity and anonymity, freedom and discipline, selfhood and service gives the book its enduring power. A significant Lawrence title, and a notably attractive copy in the original dust jacket, with a contemporary dated inscription from the year of publication.
