First edition. Small quarto. 38 leaves of text with the 38 plates printed from the original woodblocks dating from the period 1470-1540. The book came about because the blocks had been acquired by the Unwin Brothers who printed this edition. It was published to coincide with the Caxton celebration of 1877 and the type matches the characters used by Caxton in printing The Game and Playe of the Chesse. The binding (thick parchment boards decorated in blind) also accords with the style of the period, being copied from an early block book in the British Museum. Loosely inserted is the 12-page brochure which serves as the prospectus, introduction and colophon. Number 176 of 257 copies printed on handmade paper of a texture and colour to imitate that used in the fifteenth century. Signed by the Unwin Brothers.Covers rubbed at the edges and dusty. Ce receuil offert à l'Académie a probablement disparu. Les épreuves de ce premier état à l'eau-forte sont très rare. Les planches ont été ensuite reprises au burin avec de nouvelles pièces portant le nombre de planches à 65. Elles sont regroupées en deux séries: « Les mystères de la vie de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ » et « Les Miracles de la vie de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ » L'ensemble présenté ici comprend 64 gravures sur les 65, il manque la planche n°1 qui comporte le titre de la première partie.
