Richard Chevenix Trench's great grandson Anthony Chevenix Trench became known as 'The Beater of Eton' (his predilection for his sensuous touching of buttocks and then caning eventually led to his removal). Richard Chevenix Trench's memory arouses no such anxiety. Chevenix Trench was known as a genial and kindly man. In later life he became Dean of Westminster Abbey and was then elevated to the Archbishopric of Dublin (his hometown). He wrote many book of which this is one of his earliest. Full leather. Repaired about the spine. Taking the books age into account this book is in fair to good condition. The book has much character. It is still a handsome book. The covers have wear about the shelving edges and to the corners. The spine, despite the cracking, is flexible, youthful and secure. The papertrims and front and end pages are marbled. The binding along the inside front cover has been repaired. The title page has a previous owner signature. There are freckles of foxing throughout. Add to basketFirst edition. Small quarto. 38 leaves of text with the 38 plates printed from the original woodblocks dating from the period 1470-1540. The book came about because the blocks had been acquired by the Unwin Brothers who printed this edition. It was published to coincide with the Caxton celebration of 1877 and the type matches the characters used by Caxton in printing The Game and Playe of the Chesse. The binding (thick parchment boards decorated in blind) also accords with the style of the period, being copied from an early block book in the British Museum. Loosely inserted is the 12-page brochure which serves as the prospectus, introduction and colophon. Number 176 of 257 copies printed on handmade paper of a texture and colour to imitate that used in the fifteenth century. Signed by the Unwin Brothers.Covers rubbed at the edges and dusty. The spine is generally worn and the joints are splitting. The head and tail of spine are chipped. The two sets of brass clasps lack the straps. Internally fine.

Humphreys, Henry Noel (1810-79). The miracles of our lord. [32], iv pp. Full-page chromolithographed illustrations. London: Longman & Co., 1848. 164 x 119 mm. High-relief papier-mâché covers embossed with the title and six oval cartouches containing various religious scenes surrounded by a vine and strapwork frame, blind-tooled leather spine; boxed. A few minor chips and cracks in the covers, title-page a bit soiled but very good. Gift inscription on front flyleaf. First Edition. Papier-mâché bindings are particularly associated with Henry Noel Humphreys, a British writer, artist and antiquarian who was deeply influenced by the medieval and Renaissance art he had seen during his travels in Italy during the 1830s. "Inspired by the look and feel of both manuscripts and early printed books, he utilised chromolithography in his publications in an attempt to recreate the singular composition of text, illustration and ornament found in early books, that was missing from the mass-produced books of his own era" (J. Blyth, "A Binding Fit for the Black Prince," Corpus Christi College, Oxford, 2015 [web]). "Twelve of Christ's miracles as recorded in the New Testament are ornamented by Henry Noel Humphreys in this, his second papier-mâché-bound illuminated book. Six of the miracles are represented in roundels on the cover designed by Humphreys: the miraculous draught of fishes, the changing of water into wine, Jesus and Peter walking on the water, the woman cured of eighteen years' infirmity, the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, and the blind man restored to sight. Humphreys's binding is based the design of the British Museum's Psalter of Queen Melisende" (Beckwith, p. 22) A. Beckwith, Victorian Bibliomania: The Illuminated Book in 19th-Century Britain, no. 8. .

BIBLE IN ENGLISH (illustrator). First Edition. [WYCLIFFE, John]. A New Biblia Pauperum. Being Thirty-Eight Woodcuts Illustrating the Life, Parables & Miracles of Our Blessed Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ, With the Proper Descriptions thereof, extracted from the Translation of the New Testament, by John Wiclif, Sometime Rector of Lutterworth. London: Printed at the Sign of The Grasshopper, by Unwin Brothers, The Gresham Press., 1877. First edition. One of 257 copies printed and signed by the Unwin Brothers. This being number 212. Two separate parts, each numbered and signed. The first being the prospectus with the title-page as above and [12] pp. (9 3/4 x 7 3/8 inches; 248 x 187 mm). The second and main part being the bible (10 x 7 7/8 inches; 253 x 200 mm) and comprising [3], 38, [3] leaves and with thirty-eight woodblock plates each facing a page of text. The text is printed in black with red initials on verso, recto blank. Woodblock plates are facing text, printed on recto, verso blank. Printed on special handmade paper, in Caxton Type No. 2. With a preface by A.P. Stanley. Original drab boards, bound to the style of the period. Boards stamped in blind, in a design taken from an early block book in the British Museum. Spine lettered in gilt. Two brass clasps, lacking the strap attachment. Top edge dyed maroon, others uncut. Boards a bit soiled and rubbed along edges. Spine with some chipping and some wear to head and tail-pieces. Prospectus in original printed paper wrappers. Some very light soiling. Overall a very good copy of this interesting production. This limited edition was produced for the occurrence of the Caxton Celebration of 1877. The original woodblocks dating sometime between 1470-1540 were purchased by the Unwin brothers and used to print the plates which pair up nicely with the facsimile text of Wiclif's New Testament of 1525. It is unknow what work these woodblocks were originally used for the printing of, as the have not been "recognized as belonging to any printed book". "In issuing them, combined with a suitable descriptive text, our thought has been to produce, as nearly as possible, a counterpart of an old Biblia Pauperum, and thus form a fitting memorial not only of the Caxton Celebration, but also of the Wiclif Quincentenart." (Unwin Brothers, from the note by the printer). Herbert, 2008. HBS 66069. $2,500. Signed.
Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First edition. 8vo. iv,(1),31,(2)pp. Thirty-two pages are chromolithographed by Humphreys, in addition there is a leaf of the illuminator' s remarks and one comprising an index of the miracles. Bound in the original black papier-mache covers designed to look like carved ebony. The binding was based on one carved in ivory in the 12th Century and has medallions of the principal miracles intertwined with ornate decorations and the title. The front and rear covers are identical. The book is exuberantly illustrated using chromolithography on 32 pages alternating between hot bright colors and cool pages subtly tinted with various shades, the whole combining to make both a magnificent tribute to Medieval illustration and to the then new and novel technique of chromolithography. Marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Nicely rebacked in plain black leather;; a few small cracks in the binding, edges and corners neatly mended, but a very good copy. The Art of Publishers' Bookbindings, 160-162. Housed in a custom slipcase.

London, Longman and Co, 1848, 1st ed., IV text-pages, chromolithographed title page heighthened with gold and 31 further chromolithographed plates by Henry Noel Humphreys, original black moulded "papier-mâché" plaster gothic relievo binding designed by Humphreys, illustrated with intricate gothic floral motifs surrounding six medallions illustrating the miracles, black embossed leather spine, cover edges and inside dentelles gilt, all book-edges gilt, marbled endpapers, original green cloth covered board slipcase, 17,5 x 12,5 cm (book). = First edition of a landmark of Victorian book design. Ruari McLean, Victorian Book Design & Colour Printing (1963), p. 72 and 151: "One of the "supreme examples of Victorian Gothic" in which Humphreys shows a beautiful fusion of his papier-mache binding and the masterly design of his suite of chromolithographs illustrating the miracles. These bindings resemble ebony carved panels - this particular example being inspired by a 12th century psalter in possession of the British Museum - but were in fact cast in plaster over a papier mache mould. The chromolithographs are clearly inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts. "The result was splendidly gothic and impressive", and they represent "perhaps the biggest triumph among all the ingenuities of Victorian commercial book-binding". Morris/ Levin, The Art of Publishers' Bookbindings, p.160ff. Text leaves include "Remarks of the Illuminator" and "Descriptive Index of the Miracles". Relievo panels remarkably well preserved with only minimal superficial cracks; the leather spine worn with a larger piece lacking in the middle (ca.5 cm.). Add to basketFirst edition of this icon of 19th-century book design. It is one of a handful of titles that showcase Humphrey's black (so-called) papier-mâché binding and displays a fantastic suite of his chromolithographs. Such bindings, which imitate carved ebony, were cast in plaster over a papier mâché mould. "The result was splendidly gothic and impressive", and they represent "perhaps the biggest triumph among all the ingenuities of Victorian commercial book-binding" (McLean, pp. 72 & 151). This design was inspired by a binding of carved ivory on a psalter in the British Museum. Humphreys (1810-1879) was also heavily influenced by Italian and Flemish manuscripts of the Middle Ages. The skill of the chromolithography demonstrated here is masterly and improves upon that of his previous titles. Ruari McLean, Victorian Book Design & Colour Printing, 1963. Octavo. Chromolithograph title page heightened in gilt, 31 chromolithograph leaves with text and borders in medieval style, 4 pp. letterpress at end. Original black plaster boards with elaborate gothic relievo design by Humphreys, incorporating six medallion vignettes depicting miracles, black embossed morocco spine, spine and both boards lettered in relief, gilt inner dentelles, Fountain pattern marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a custom blue cloth box. Relievo crisp and unrubbed, boards superficially cracked at edges, lower corners bumped, letterpress pages foxed, plates bright. A near-fine copy.
