First edition. 220pp. Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) is probably best known as the author of The Screwtape Letters and The Chronicles of Narnia, but he also wrote many other works. In this book Lewis argues that before one can learn from the study of history whether or not any miracles have ever occurred, one must first settle the philosophical question of whether it is logically possible that miracles can occur in principle. He accuses modern historians and scientific thinkers, particularly secular biblical scholars, of begging the question against miracles, insisting that modern disbelief in miracles is a cultural bias thrust upon the historical record and is not derivable from it. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the top front corner and the spine ends. The bottom 3" of the spine is very faded. The contents are tight and clean with light foxing to the endpapers and last page of the book and the rear free endpaper is partially browned. The front free endpaper has a green name stamp on the front and a name is written on the back. The unclipped dustwrapper is rather grubby with shelf wear and some soiling and staining. A small piece is missing from the top front corner and bottom front edge and up to about 1/2" is missing from the top of the spine. About 3" is missing from the bottom of the spine and there is creasing around the bottom spine corner of the back of the wrapper. Some tears on the edges, including the spine edges, have been repaired on the reverse with document repair tape. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic cover.
