Hard Cover. Condition: Good binding. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor dust jacket. Octavo. xxxi, [1], 822, [6] pp., illus. Self-styled, "De Luxe Edition." Here signed by Kent on the front free endpper. As issued, in publisher's cloth with Kent illustration in gilt on the front cover. Spine partially sunned; unfortunate predation to the cloth of the back joint, otherwise, binding is quite fresh with only light fraying at the tail of the spine; bookplate on the front pastedown; contents clean and binding solid; dust jacket with large loss of the spine and a portion of the rear panel; front flap is separated but present, all held together in a mylar cover. Poor to Fair jacket. Tanselle, in his A Checklist of Editions of Moby-Dick, 1851-1976, writes of the first, quarto edition of Kent's work: "The most elaborate physical presentation which had been accorded to Moby-Dick up to this time, and one of the finest examples of bookmaking to found among all the editions of his work. Kent's illustrations are now perhaps the best-known illustrations for Moby-Dick and are certainly among the most effective" (from Tanselle, No. 17). And indeed, Kent's illustration is singular and captured in this present Garden City edition (Tanselle, No. 18c) which was printed by the Lakeside Press, after an American and a British trade edition in a reduced-size, one-volume format (as here) was printed for Random House and Cassell respectively. Rare with Kent's signature.

Add to basketFirst Rockwell Kent edition, limited to 1,000 sets, signed by the artist on the limitation page at the end of volume 3. In 1926, the publisher approached Rockwell Kent to illustrate Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast (1840). Kent demurred, selecting instead Moby Dick (1851). He had complete creative control over his edition and "spent five years researching and designing his project, during which time he discovered many of the 19th-century textual and visual sources that had influenced Melville" (Abrams, p. 377). The result has been hailed as among the great American illustrated books of the century, and it is also credited with reviving public interest in a sublime but difficult novel. Grolier Fine Printed 100, 22. Matthew Jeffrey Abrams, "Illuminated Critique: The Kent Moby-Dick", Word & Image, vol. 33, no. 4, 2017. 3 vols, quarto (285 x 207 mm). Profusely illustrated after pen-and-ink drawings, in the style of woodcuts, by Rockwell Kent. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in black morocco, spine lettered and decorated in silver after original spines, front covers with abstract whale design and volume number blocked in silver after original covers, orange and black geometric patterned endpapers, silver edges. Housed in a black leather entry slipcase by the Chelsea Bindery. Offsetting from title pages, an excellent set finely bound.
