È il luglio 1984 (esattamente cento anni dopo la nascita di Amedeo Modigliani) quando a Livorno vengono ripescate, nel Fosso Reale, tre teste scolpite (si dice) da Modigliani stesso. I giornali di quell'estate riportano per giorni i particolari della notizia, il dibattito che ne segue, gli interventi degli esperti. Poi, a settembre, si scopre che le tre teste erano dei falsi, pietre scolpite dal trapano di tre studenti livornesi, e scoppia il caso. Nel frattempo l'unica persona che avrebbe sicuramente potuto accorgersi che si trattava di falsi, e cioè la figlia di Modigliani, Jeanne, muore a Parigi prima di poter vedere le "sculture". Giovanni Morandi ricostruisce tutta la vicenda della "beffa di Modigliani", dando la parola anche ai falsari, quelli che venti anni fa erano tre ragazzi burloni e che adesso raccontano come quella beffa ha cambiato la loro vita. In appendice la biografia di Modigliani, la cronologia della beffa e la bibliografia.
