Item Description: William S Lincoln N.D. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. Fourth Edition. An undated (early 20th Century) 4th edition hardcover, without dustwrapper, in decorative stamped boards with bright gilt lettering to front board which is rubbed to the top and bottom edge and rubbed/bumped to the corners. The decorative spine with bright gilt lettering is bumped/rubbed to the ends with some damage to each, and one torn page. About 2/3 of the decorative pre-printed pages have been filled with 295 carefully cut crests and monograms, of which 165 are military - mainly of British and Indian Army regiments - some of which are from Lincoln's pre-printed sheets, but many taken directly from correspondence. There are also 11 complete cards with military crests which have been pasted on blank facing pages. Although the book has no previous ownership writing, the space reserved for the personal monogram of the owner has been filled with a neatly cut example of the Scottish Mitchell family crest. William S Lincoln was one of the originators of stamp collecting and of particular interest is a contemporary catalogue bound into the back of the book which lists albums, stamps and sheets of monograms and crests for sale along with a photograph of their shop in London. A unique item. Carefully packaged and posted within 48 hours from our wee bookshop in Scotland. Bookseller Inventory # 40257

Item Description: n.d., likely early-19th century. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good+. Full morocco, stamped in black and gilt on boards and spine; pp. [100], with monograms or sepia albumen photographs tipped onto the recto of nearly every page. Nearly 500 monograms, embossed or printed on a variety of papers, in a variety of colors and styles (armorial, royal, illuminated initials), and arranged in elaborate radial, geometric, and floral patterns -- and on one page arranged on an illustration of a man with a sandwich board, the most whimsical of the groupings. Includes 27 mounted albumen photographs (across 13 leaves, so some of them full-page), usually replicating classical or religious paintings or statues, with a handwritten caption identifying the work and its location. An elegant collection, in excellent condition, just some light off-setting from the adhesive here and there. Spine and upper board darkened, otherwise a very nice binding. Item Description: New Jersey. Hardcover. Cloth spine. Book Condition: Very Good. Wonderful American folk art album, with much of the artwork inspired by that of Kate Greenaway. N.d., circa 1880s. Oblong, 7 by 12 cm. Unpaginated, 18 leaves, or 36 pages, almost all with original artwork. The watercolor on the front board is a bucolic fantasy of birds, sprigs with flowers amid the grass and a butterfly, and the style it embodies is repeated consistently within, with the addition of Greenaway-ish children frolicking on a number of the pages. 21 pages feature color illustration, which was also done with color pencils as well as watercolors. We believe the artist was from the vicinity of the Oranges, based on some of the cut-outs. Monograms augmented with original artwork are a small minority of surviving monogram and crest albums, and this is the first one we have come upon with an American provenance. It is also the first we have seen in such a small format. A final distinguishing point about this album is the common thread running through the artwork. The images relate to one another, in other words. Moderate wear, and soiling on the cover. A slight cock to the text block. Bookseller Inventory # 005338

Pohlmann, Rudolf Presber, Max Heinecken, dr. Roediger-Elink Schuurman, Sophie Andreae, Karl Buckler, Carl Rehbock (foto als Chinees), dr. A.W. Janssen, Caroline Rehbock-Janssen. M13357 M13357. Bookseller Inventory # 49504

Item Description: Full Morocco. Book Condition: Very Good. N.d., circa 1870s (one later illustration is dated 1879). With eight illustrations of penwork incorporating monograms and an occasional die-cut, plus eight other original ink drawings, three signed by M. L. Robinson, which is almost surely the married name of Ms. Casebourne, and one unfinished drawing. The penwork throughout is sophisticated. A few of the images are copies of known works, such as a buck modeled after Landseer's rendering of such. The majority, though, are almost certainly truly original, which does not mean that they might not have been heavily influenced by other works. The hand is manifestly skilled. One female visage is used repeatedly, and in a few illustrations, the same face is repeated with only minor modifications, and so one might conjecture that the face was a self-portrait. Depicted are a lady riding side-saddle, three sportswomen (croquet, angling and probably archery are represented), and young maidens dressed probably for a ball. Other images include bouquets, sporting, coastal and country life scenes. We can infer that the album was begun by Ms. Casebourne as a nubial young woman from a good family, and she continued with it upon marrying. In the album we catch glimpses of the lifestyle of such a woman of the period. The leather binder housing the album has considerable wear. There is light finger soiling on the margins and the back of the illustrated leaves. The album measures 11.5 by 9.5 inches, 30 by 24 cm. Bookseller Inventory # 001981
